I have found I used to swear by optima, But after the last 8 years or so they have not held up like the last one I had on a 94 ram, it went an honest 5 years, and 80 k miles, but the last 3 that I have had only lasted 3 or 4 years,so in mopar muscle they had an Odyssey battery sit in a car for 5 years, AND START THE CAR FINE,
and I bought one, seems good, and made in the U.K.

Halfords special for me.........2 years in and no problems.
I've got an easy disconnect on the negative so never had charge/discharge issues.
I looked at Optima, but couldn't justify the price at the time!

When I got the car it had an old looking small halford battery. It lasted 8 years with me... and that wasnt trickling and caring. That was just 'plug it in once a month over winter'.
When I replaced it I went for a Bosch for a diesel transit. Will crank for hours. (as certified by dr.Worman who uses on his Chally.)

Bosch is enormous, but I have room and the price is more attractive. Yellow top looks great though

i go to costco and find a battery that has the correct posts in the appropriate place and orirentation
i measure its size to make sure it fits the tray and hold down and won't hit the bonnet
i check to see if it is a top it up when necesary battery (i like them they work well enough with old style alternators and regualators they put up with partial discharge much better)
check the price
then go and see what it was intended for in the little book attached to the shelf
if it was for a diesel 4 6 or 8 or a decent sized 6 or v8 petrol van
I take it
if option on 2 or more i take the one at the best price with the highest cold cranking amps
my car sits for months at a time during the winter and it always starts
keep in mind the larger the capcity the longer your ammeter spends pinned to the 40 amp stop when you start the car with a half flat battery.
and the greater the current above 40 amps will be if you have modern alternator of 40 amp capacity or more
modern alterbnator and high capacity battery by pass the ammeter. you will bust it or melt the wires
35 amp alternator and high capcity battery make sure cables are ok
standard capacity battery and 35 amp alternator you'd be hard pushed to melt an ice cream, your igntion is stealing 3 amps from the get go
