Brighton Speed Trials

Post by newport100 »

Went to the Bike weekend a few years ago- admitidly spurred on by the American Choppers thing going on there on the Sunday- went a day early and happened upon the Brighton Speed Trials along Maderia drive on the Sat

What a great laid back event!

Full spectrum of cars and bikes - hammering down what looks like an 1/8th mile - huge fun- crowd safety seemed to be at an all time minimum(not condoning that!) - thoroughly enjoyable tho

Anyone know anymore or fancy it??

I tried to google the dates but they dont seem firmed up yet??

1/4 mile I think Mark, according to that article, anyway.

Also think it's usually/always? on during August Bank Hol weekend.
It's an event I've thought about going to for years, but never managed to

I'm sure Adam would know more.... :atthemovies:

I'm not sure if this is on this year, the greens are /were trying to get it stopped. It should be on or about 13 Sept if it's happening. http://www.thisbrighton.co.uk/culture-speedtrials.htm

You need to speak to Martin, he used to race his dope burning Rudge sprinter at the Brighton Speed trials.

Sure did and the road was as rough as a badgers behind with the solid rear and girder forks! I used to get an invitation because I was in the Vintage Motor Cycle Club and raced the Rudge on short circuit. The last time I did it I was parked next to the JPS Norton rotary GP team, they were really friendly.

After one run we were waiting up at the marina end and watched a guy come off his Honda 1100 drag bike. He hits his head on the kerb and died a week or so later. Not a particularly safe venue then.

Even back then the car club were trying to stop bikes at the event. I think it's the Brighton Car Club that organise it and dish out the invites. Lot's of interesting cars, a Formula 3 V8 3 litre won it one year. Don't remember any drag cars when I was there but there were Corvettes etc.

I'll try and dig out some pics from when I was there. In the meantime, here's a pic of my 1934 Rudge Special and yes Ivor's right, it runs on methanol.

I suspect they wouldn't be keen on getting shown up by MMA members, you'd wipe the floor. Notice in the pics there's NO American muscle or what looks like drag racing machinery.
