318 rebuild

Hi all .. Hoping to get heads up on getting my 318 engine rebuilt . A friend has recommended Cleaseby,s at Durham but they just do the rebuild ,and I,m wanting it installed and set up for me . You might guess I,m not the most mechanically gifted person on here . oh by the way my Duster has 225 slant 6 at moment .

Ian, have you done a compability check? Is the trans auto or manual etc..
Engine swap is straightforward with correct conversion engine mounts but the trans side needs checking out.
Also if you are having the 318 rebuilt do go for higher compression pistons. The 318s are all low compression so don't be hamstrung from the start.

You'll need a V8 904 transmission as well, the 6 cyl. Trans won't bolt up to the V8. In the North I can only think of Dave Billadeau that could be relied on to do the whole job.

not all 318's are equal.

the '67 318 has the forged crank and 9 to 1 pistons as standard. think they went as low as 7 to 1 in the fuel crisis years. so much research needed.

try Anton on this forum for the full instilation?

and drop kick the auto out the door, 4 speeds are where its at ;)

I believe the K Member is different between slant 6s and the V8s.
Not sure they are easily modded to suit?

As also said if you getting it rebuilt, get the compression up.
Keith Black Pistons seem to be widely used in the US and won't break the bank. Add cam, intake, 4 barrel and headers, should easily see 300hp!

The above is worth a read and it's easy to see how bolt ons can add surprising HP to a stockish setup! :thumbright:

Schumacher make conversion mounts to fit a small block to a 6 pot K frame. Personally I'd rather change the K to a V8 one but I guess they're not that easy to find in the UK these days.

Thanks for the advice/comments guys . I,ve taken on board what you are saying . The guy I arranged to buy the 318 from actually has a rebuilt 904 with it .

if you get the car and the motor/trans and the correct set of engine mounts to any garage they should be able to hoist it in and do a set up

so what you need is a handy geezer with a lift, some jacks and some common sense

and it helps if he has a recovery truck to get the lot from you to him

try George at Micro Blast, Arch 28, Forth Goods Yard, Forth Street, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE NE1 3PG(under the end of the newcastle side of the Redheugh Bridge next to the old Cookson/leadworks site (now the arena)

he does VW beetles and Vans mainly.... but. runs a recovery buisness as well he is part of CF recovery

if its mechanical he can do it

keep in mind i have not seen the guy in 20 years and he may just say NO (or he may no longer be there) (you can try saying do you remember dave and ruth from Ponteland (red 1303 and white 67 cal look)

but putting a motor in and getting it to run well enough for you to go to a man who can tune a holley carb and set up the kickdown is what you need. if you take a service manual with you he may even do the lot

but he can and will (or he used to) act as a sensible pair of hands for this kind of shenanigans.


he does however specialise in welding and media blasting and if there is lots of that work about he'll want to do that first, however given his general good nature i'd expect at least a suggestion of who could if he can't.

a catering pack sized tin of Nescafe from costco always used to work wonders....

Should be an 8.25 on that year car, strong enough for even a hot 318.
