Just spent the weekend at a local steam rally, I want a full size traction engine now :D

Some of the miniature traction engines are amazing, outstanding workmanship from a bygone age that we'll never see again sadly

Well, for those of you who haven't sussed me..........
This took my late father some 40 years to build,it's 2" scale and is exactly like the real thing to drive and manage.

Wow, we know our steam here but didnt realise it was 2 inch from the pics, thought it was full size.
Excellent. There are several sentinels local to us, buses and lorries and a 1/3 rd scale electric one.

Everything was measured and scaled from friends fullsize waggons, only the engine is a deviation, following a Doble compound design and larger than it should be.
Fathers coffin was carried on the real thing to the cemetery.

The perfect scale makers plates were photo etched using positive/negative images of the real thing, then reduced to the correct dimensions. The screws holding them are 14BA,about the thickness of a needle!

For driving it there is a plywood flat bed with seat but there is also a perfect scale wooden dropside body with all correct hinges and catches for photos.
I don't have a picture and it's hidden away in storage now.
You may appreciate just how tight it is for fingers in the cab  Burnt finger tips are the norm after 5 mins.
Boiler is all copper at 120psi with a superheater, original steel boiler was as per original with studded flanges to take it apart for maintenance, sadly it lasted 8 seasons before rusting through, that was 4.5mm powerstation boiler tubing.

Now that is VERY impressive!! A true labour of love and beautifully done. I love the detail. Your Dad was a very talented man indeed!

Not on this scale but I have fond memories of my Granddad running a small traction engine around his living room when I was a kid. It ran on meths and I can still remember the smell now

thanks for posting it up for us

Cheers Steve :thumbright:
