B Body Auto Removal

The time has finally come when my 727 auto has enough problems that it needs to be sent off for some love and care.

Going to pull it out, and just wondering if there are any watch outs/ tips worth knowing? I'll be doing it on the drive, and it's coming out of a 66 Belvedere wagon.

Yes, a squirt of paint on one leg of the flexplate and convertor, the bolt holes only line up in one position and this will make reinstallation a lot quicker. Also the convertor comes out with the box, don't try to leave it on the back of the engine as some do.

I've done a couple and Blue is dead right about the converter/flex plate line up.
Basically,
Prop off
Trans cross member off inc the mount for the trans
Support trans under pan carefully
Starter off
Coolant pipes off at trans and any linkages, speedo etc. All on drives side.
Engine to trans bolts out but make sure engine is supported under sump.
Hopefully the exhaust allows clearance for trans to come out
..and jack up the car high at the front to allow the trans to be moved out. I tak off the drivers side front wheel to get some clearance for wrestling.

Simply lower trans

And of course you need to undo the 4 bolts that hold the flex plate and converter together after you've marked them with paint as Blue said. To acces those bolts you'll need to rotate the crank as they're not visible more than one or two bolts at a time.
Always use loctite when refixing

When are the flexplate/converter bolts visible to be undone?

Peer underneath for the front: you may have a protective plate over the flex plate which needs to be removed at the same time you remove the starter. You'll then see one or maybe two really flat headed bolts on the flexplaye. Don't lose them. The are specific size and came as either smaller or larger. I used new ones.
Undo each one as you rotate the engine via the front crank bolt. Go clockwise so you don't undo the front crank bolt in error!
No need to refit that plate in most people's opinion.

Do the mopar boxes pee trans fluid out the tailshaft when you remove the prop?
I don't know the answer... but it might be another "gotcha" to plan for?

Yes, if you pull the prop and slip yoke out and then tilt if you have not drained the pan.

Yes, I forgot that as I have a deep pan trans with drain plug.

put a bit of fence post or 2 by4 between sump and steering cross link

it will prop up engine for a good while with no detrimental effect

not right but not too wrong either.....
