440 big block
Any one know what mpg you would get from a 440 charger ?
Re: 440 big block
It depends...
Rear Gear ratio
Rear Tyre Height
Convertor Stall speed and Slip
Compression Ratio
Camshaft profile
Induction set up
....and most importantly your right foot weight
I have averaged 17mpg low speed cruising on a 440 Six Pak car, and 6 mpg in the same car driving "spiritedly".
Base any plans on 10 mpg and you won't go far wrong.

I get around 10 in town and 14 cruising, that’s with a light foot.

In our experience, 10 if you're careful
Re: 440 big block
~11 on mild 440
~8 on current. Sure that can be improved upon.

On a Roadkill episode I saw recently on Discovery, where they built then drove a hemi powered 55 across the States, they started off at 7mpg but after a day or two of on-the-road-tuning the fuel injection, they got it up to 17

Re: 440 big block
My record for a road car, if I took it very easy, was 3 mpg.
It got a lot worse if you put your foot down.
The Challenger uses 1.5 Gallons from Start up in the Pits, drive to Fire up lane, shut off and push, start, burn out, run, and steady cruise back to the pits...
My Leaning Tower of Power did 29 mpg to Speedfest.... /6 is the future!!

Me too. I gotta do the fuel lines anyway, so may as well plumb it up...RobTwin wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 19 1:13 pm On a Roadkill episode I saw recently on Discovery, where they built then drove a hemi powered 55 across the States, they started off at 7mpg but after a day or two of on-the-road-tuning the fuel injection, they got it up to 17

I need to spend money getting this thing set up anyway; might be just as well putting it toward that.

9.73 per gallon on a run from Buckingham to Wheels day with 4 adult occupants, at steady 65 mph.(My axle ratio could be better @ 3.9-1)
Engine rebuilt in 2013 back in the US not sure of spec as previous owner has no paperwork, but has been balanced, has Edelbrock heads, Holley double pumper, lumpy cam, roller rockers etc. From the way she revs sounds & goes I think a high compression motor, or so people in the know tell me.
I have read that stock motors only got 10 -11 from the factory back in the day.
Thought about installing EFI but would it make that much difference on MPG to warrant the expense ? Fitted a sniper type system to my Big Block Chevy but only got 2 miles to gallon more. Although other benefits were better starting and no flat spots, which was the reason I fitted it. My 440 starts and runs perfect with the Holley so loathed to interfere.

Started with an MGB in 2004, then built a Cobra Rep with a Chevy 383,next a Chevy Bel air with a Big Block 454 and now lastly maybe ! my 68 Charger 440 RT always work to do.
Re: 440 big block
My '57 Chev with a 396 ci engine and very tall highway gears still only does / did 12 mpg....
You have got to do a LOT of miles for an EFI to cost in...

Re: 440 big block
Rog, look into a gear vendor overdrive. Main unit is made by the same folk that built the overdrive units for the MG's we had back in the day and just bolts onto the back of the autobox. They can be set up to kick in and out automatically or you can operate it yourself and split gears same as a B.Roger S wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 19 7:43 pm 9.73 per gallon on a run from Buckingham to Wheels day with 4 adult occupants, at steady 65 mph.(My axle ratio could be better @ 3.9-1)
