Mini starter crossed my mind, but the one on there is quite new, and I'm spending too much!

I have my spare mini starter sitting here if you wanted to try it to see if it gets you out of trouble...

No Matt, you are just warming up if you want to use it regularly and want it io be reliable..

Idont logically see how a mini starter will sort anything they are the same big original v mini ??????????????

Me either, I don't understand how the starter can be hitting the flexplate, it's not something I have ever come across or heard of.

Igot the same flex plate off you Dunc, fitted it and had the same thing as Matts got now so we looked at the flex plates for sale, it stated must be used with a mini starter :thumbright:

Blue, that would be great if I could try that, it may save pulling everything out again if it does fit.

I saw on a youtube vid that a V6 Mopar starter is a mini starter, so could a Chrysler Voyager one fit? just thinking they will be accessible over here in scrap yards.

Interesting the FABO thread says that OEM is the only way to go with 904 trans as the other flex plates are too big.

Thanks to Blue's loan of a mini starter I have now got it running and MOt'd :thumbright:

New noise appeared, probably masked by the others. Found a lighter top end noise, but had about 3mm play on the end of the fan blades. New water pump and slightly looser fan belt has quitened it down a lot.

Now need to be brave enough to drive further than the end of the town.

Thanks to everyone for the support and advice and parts on this PITA engine noise. This club is a lifeline when these cars play up !

So we ve been a few places now, bit of an oil leak from the sump so that needs re doing, but another noise has appeared, similar to before, same location, top passenger side.
Here we go again :(

I've just put the cover on it for now. Tempted to drive it till it goes bang.

Its now got headers on, which sound alot noisier than the cast manifolds, so maybe they are just full of pinholes that are getting bigger out of sight?

Here is the noise,

It sounds a bit more top end this time, but quite clattery. Headers are a bit noisy but you can hear the clatter over the exhaust once it goes above tickover.

I have had the valve covers off nothing broken, but I wonder if the rockers are not on the right way? I've read the Small Block Mopar book and it is confusing talking about the notch on the shaft being to the right and down, but once the rockers are on as described the notch goes to the back of the head (pass side).

Could rockers not in the right place cause such a noise, i.e rods touching head ands lack of oil to the shaft as the oil way doesnt line up?

Or have I just knackered a lifter from lack of oil, it did get low, but didnt bring the light on.

Yea shaft orientation can be confusing. When it's correct you'll have the notch at the front on one head, and at the rear on the other head, offhand I can't remember which way round it is. What you're trying to achieve is lining up the rocker oil feed in the head with the one in the shaft while all the rocker oiling holes are pointing down, hope that makes sense...

Yes that makes perfect sense! the rockers look to have an offset oilway so I assume its best to just see that everything lines up so the oil can get through.

Rockers all back on, all seems Ok, everything moving as it should.

Looked underneath, one torque converter bolt sheared off, one next to it finger tight and undone about 1 1/2 turns.

This has done about 300 miles since fitting the SFI flex plate.

have bolted the loose one back, noise is less due to 3 tight instead of only 2 and the bolt head is not touching anything else. Still some noise as the plate is obviously running in and out of contact with the converter at the point where the bolt is missing.

What causes these to come loose??
Bottom end out of balance, bent torque converter face?
Bent crank?

For now I want to try and get the sheared bolt out, new bolt in and drive it some more to see if that is the only noise.
