is the oil feed hole in the block getting uncovered in a certain position off the lifter ?? if it is then that is a problem and will need another type,

With the lifter fully down (closed) , the lifter gallery is slightly exposed , so allowing the oil to leak over the top of lifter.

Drilling and plugging, you'll have to strip it down again Adam
different lifters surely

Good spot, Adam; that will save a lot of heartache later on....

Blimey this is some tech thread! Keep on keeping on Adam, you are so nearly there and spotting any potential problems on the way, which has to be the right way to do it!
Great work, that is a monster motor.

Might be an idea to spin the pump up with a drill and turn the engine over by hand to see if the pressure fluctuates and how much oil is gushing out. I remember Dave telling me when he had his lifter problem, there was no oil pressure at all at certain points when they did that, and of course they was oil gushing out of the lifter gallery at those points.

Does anyone over here put the bronze lifter guides in this will cure the problem, and if you have lifter failure or one jumps you don't have catastrophic oil starvation. Mine was done in the States and I had a lifter break on me and no major oil pressure problem.

Jim,
Did they bush all of them or leave IN/Ex lifters on cylinder 2 passenger side, or those as well?
I read it needs enlarging the galley on those 2 to avoid mains starvation ??

Sorry Steve , don't understand the question , bushing #2 in/ex lifter bores has no effect on the mains , it's the pas side lifter gallery that feed #s 2,3,4,& 5 mains.
Jim is talking about bushing the lifter bore , this will not effect the mains , some restrict the drivers side gallery , or plug it off all together when using solid lifters , the problem with this is the oil to the lifters is reliant on the oil coming down off the heads.
The lifters in the 602/5

have provision for push rod oiilng , hence they werent bushed which i think is better unless a lifter jumps out

, but the pushrods havent been drilled as the oiling to the heads is fed from the spray bars , no problem with the oiling , the oil was coming out the lifter cup when lash was maxed out , although the oil groove is pretty close to the gallery opening.
As Jim points out , bushing the lifters is a safer way to go , also eliminates the leak down on all 16 lifters.

Adam, Sorry its not clear....
I meant the lifter bores on cylinder 2 passenger side, need to be left not bushed or the oil galley feed needs to be enlarged if they are....
...(to avoid oil flow reduction to the mains galley),
as thats where it changes direction down to the mains, and the bush goes into the galley further there than the lifters did.
The fix is you have to open the galley there from the front of the block only as deep as the first 2 lifters on the pasenger side, and tap and insert a 1/2 inch plug in the front of the block.
this allows enough oil past the first 2 lifter bushes to the rest of the Galley

Interesting Steve , but surely if you're bushing all 8 lifters on pas side gallery the modification is a waste of time , as you've already eliminated leak down on those lifters giving more pressure/volume to the mains , i don't think the bushes protrude enough if any into the gallery to warrant any loss of flow through to the mains , if this were the case then the whole pas side lifter gallery would need opening up when bushing lifter bores ,especially up to #4 main , as this has to do the brunt of the oiling , the lifter galleries are 9/16th , plenty big enough , there should be no issues at all without having to open up the gallery , not disagreeing Steve , but a pointless exercise , as said , the lifter bushing don't protrude into the gallery to warrant what youre sayin.
The mains BRANCH off @ four intersecting points along the gallery , #4 being last but one , this also being the most important one out of all of them.
Maybe you're thinking of drilling deeper into the REAR lifter gallery on drivers side & plugging the gallery off , would'nt need bushed lifters bores on drivers side bank.

I RECKON FOR REASON,S MORE THAN OILING IS THE LIFTERS BORES ARE BUSHED BECAUSE BIG ROLLER CAMS WEAR THE BLOCK OUT
oops i am shouting sos

bushing the bores in the 1,st place is good
if your lifters are uncovering the oil feed holes brutal by any amount i would not be happy

Lifter bores are fine Dunc , was the oil holes in lifters bleeding down..............................
THOSE BIG OLE ROLLER LOBES PUT A HEAVY THRUST ON THE LIFTER WALLS , SO A GOOD THING BUSHING THE LIFTERS , ALTHOUGH THEY MIGHT LAST A LITTLE LONGER WITHOUT THE BORES BEIN BUSHED.
Ooops forgor me cap button was on.
