Yes, it does have a wire from the charging circuit into the loom for the module.
***Are you suggesting that I disconnect this wire? ***
It has an aftermarket Tach, but I have tried disconnecting it from the coil without success. Also, it used to run fine with the Tach connected.
Unfortunately, I do not have a spare Dizzy, either points or electronic.
Thanks for the continued input because until this is resolved, I am struggling to come up with new ideas.[/b]

Yeah cos I'm clutching at straws and I don't know what it is for
has to be the ignition module or something to do with the coil wiring
if all else is good.
do you run the 4 pin ballast resistor?
has part of it died?
Miles is selling an HEI set up for £40
all you need for that is switched 12 volts from the ignition key and a place to bolt/earth the module.
provided you have a magnetic trigger dizzy
if it doesn't work with that its surely the pickup in the dizzy
although I'd be carful without working out whast wrong there is a small risk you might fry it

Well, I think the problem may be sorted, certainly I'm closer than I was. I rebuilt the ignition system using some spares that I had tried previously, (without luck). Blow me, it fired up!! I took it out for a quick spin and it drove nicely, stopped and re-started OK.
Problem is, I don't know what the cure was. I've stripped and rebuilt the system probably half a dozen times trying to get this sorted, but with no luck. This time it fired up.
I guess I'll see if it can be relied upon for a while before I start swapping out parts to see if/when it fails again.
Thanks for all the input.

A broken wire somewhere that, this time has connected but might fail over the next pothole?

That is quite possible if the wiring loom is original and the insulation has hardened over time and with heat.
It may be worth overlaying the ignition system and charging system wires with new ones to see if the situation improves.

I have tested continuity on all of the wires before and never found an issue. Of course, when applying current a weak spot such as broken wire or dry solder could inhibit current. I do worry about it failing again, having not identified the root of the problem. I guess a new loom may give piece of mind, however, I think I'll swap out the parts first to see if I can get it to fail again.
Thanks again for your help.

Well, the car needed no prompting to let me down again. In fact, the day after it ran with no issue it refused to start or even fire.
Today, if I keep cranking, the car begins to catch, slowly building up revs, (misfiring badly), usually ending in a loud backfire through the exhaust before it dies.
Tried advancing the timing but it does the same except it spits through the carb. Does not want to run.
(The timing cannot be far out because as mentioned previously, last week, it inexplicably started and drove lovely with no hesitation or misfiring.)
My plugs are newish with approx 150 miles, gaps are at 0.035". On inspection, they are wet with fuel.
