Detroit #4 Sunday 3/3

Stopped at O’Rielly’s for Chevy G10 Van parts. Much more successful than NPD. I picked up a few service parts as well. Second day at Detroit Autorama at the COBO centre. Sunday show times were 10am to 7pm

The “downstairs” show at the Detroit Autorama has a completely different vibe than the show upstairs. It’s more like a gathering of petrol heads who happened to bring a bunch of really cool cars & trucks. Seems less formal, everyone looking at one another’s rides and chatting about them, more like a Sunday morning Cars & Coffee outdoor meet. Some are survivors that were built back in the day and are being preserved rather than restored.

Detroit #5 Monday 4/3

This the was the coldest day, the TV weatherman said with windchill it would feel like -9F/-23C. Headed west 140 miles to the Gilmore Car Museum.

As an aside, they appear to use plenty of salt on the roads, resulting in a much higher rate of tin worm than we’re used to seeing here these days. This truck was typical of a quite a few vehicles we saw on the road. Are ‘cills’ not structural anymore?? saw quite a few without any at all, and we were overtaken by a truck one day that had clearly snapped in half, wasn’t quick enough with the camera for that one

Gilmore Car Museum. What an amazing place, not just the cars but the whole facility, immaculate. There’s several buildings in the complex and not all of them are open in winter months, but we were still treated to a viewing of about 250 of the most stunning cars I’ve ever seen, there’s a further 250 cars in other buildings closed for winter. the Chrysler Turbine Car made my day, no, this one made my week!! Of course, there was a ‘do not touch’ policy but no barrier meant I could have a good look all around the car and the windows were open to have a good look inside, love it!!
