Next in went the new slightly bigger cam from .488/.491 .525/.525. Plenty of Lube coz you don't want to be shafted dry.

As you can see by that time I had put new brass core plugs in, they too got a slap of the tacky stuff

Almost forgot to mention the big ends also got a good dose of bearing muck, and also you can see all the wide rod shoulders are on the crank journal side as they should be.

Crank shaft end float was measured too. Dial gauge was set up on to the end of the crank and zeroed, a screw driver placed between crank journal and centre cap to push crank forward, giving me a reading of 5 thou crank end float. I span the crank 180 degrees and repeated this time a reading of 6 thou, 1 thou deviation in the crank

Chrysler recommend 0.002-0.007 crank end play, so I am happy with that.

Time for the timing chain. I decided to put a tensioner in too as it also takes the place of the cam thrust plate. I also drilled out the 4th hole which the original thrust plate had but its not drilled out yet in pic

Whilst I was replacing the core plugs I came across this......An old core plug stuck in the top of the block, I had to tap it down to its correct hole to get it out. That wasn't the only one either, I found 2 more behind the 2 plugs at the very back of the engine, thankfully I got them all out.

Time to turn my attention to the heads, heads stripped and given a good de-coke. You can see the nice shinny new inlet valves waiting to go in.

As I was replacing all the inlet valves I thought it worth while giving the exhaust valves a re lap, guides all ok so I left them alone, spring shims and seals replaced

Should give you added confidence when you take it out for the first time that its A okay!!!!
