The rocker shafts were on in the correct position?Otherwise there's no oil to the rockers.

How would I be able to check that Steve?
Can you tell of this first picture?

The oil holes in the rocker shaft point downwards and 15 degrees outwards from the centre line of the bolt holes. There's a drawing in the FWM that shows it,I don't have a scanner.

twas mentioned by Jon last night re shafts in correct way. Aint gonna get no oil up there if they upside down as Latil says - they can physically fit right and wrong way. Need to double check - could be secondary issue if not root cause.

I've just checked both rocker shafts, and lubrication holes are 15 degrees (from bolt centrline) towards the valve end of rocker arm.

Sounds right

On the underneath? If they came off with the holes on top, that would be wrong.

So,what have you found? No kiss marks on any pistons, top oiling ok.Looking towards oil pump failed or timing chain slipped, lifters jamming in their bores or someone over revved it. The bearing shells you've shown don't look oil starved but they do look scored from a lot of debris in the oil.
As already mentioned,it will probably be easier to find a spare engine for now.

O.k, that sounds like a plan.
What would I pay for an engine and has anybody got one going cheap??

if this engine is to be rebuilt double check the centre cam bearings are lined up with the oil holes for the oil gallerys to the heads as any engine builder knows its easy to get them off centre hence lack of oil to the heads

Well you have an intereting choice mate

if its not the original block then that leaves you many options you could go bigger more power :twisted:no need to be tied to the block you have, but its your choice on what is best to do mate?
Rebuild it may be best as you could learn a lot from the experiance, and it will make the car even more your own creation.
