My Valiant has no carpet at the moment, it's noisy, always looks scruffy and gets very hot because there's nothing to insulate you from the header heat. Personally, I think cars without carpet just look unfinished.

I could do with some heat from the headers as there is no heater in the car, but as im a fair weather driver I wont need the extra heat.

Engine was going back in today, until we noticed oil dripping from the rear of the engine as we lowered it into position, damn, back out with it clutch and flywheel off, it is dripping from the bottom of the rubber rear half moon sump seal. Just as well it came to light then, annoying but gotta be thankful for small mercies, I have a feeling the sump may be distorted and not pulling up tight enough against the seal, wont know until I drop the sump and give it a closer inspection. Teething problems.

Just as well you noticed, if it's dripping now, probably would of been much worse when running....

Those rear main seals are a bugger to fit - we had 4 attempts on the 512 Stroker before we got it (sort of) oil tight.
The web is littered with treads in the 'states about rear seal leaks.......
I think the old "Rope seal" caps do not work well with the modern and harder neoprene half seals....silicon is your friend.........

It beats me that with all the new stuff for these old motors thats available, that a simple "all time fix" has not surfaced

I cant understand why they do not make an all in one sump gasket for the 340,

Unless there is one I don't know about?

Looks like I have fixed the rear sump leak. Rather than use the normal cork gasket, I invested in the Felpro Gasket, as you can see its a good deal thinner therefore allowing the sump to pull that bit tighter. I also left the sump loose over night to allow the bead of silicone to go completely off rather than giving it a couple of hours before fully tightening it down.
