Ah you went for one of them Carl. I think it'll work fine, mines got 400-500 miles on it now and it's settled in nice, little bit grabby on take off but grips like a good un :thumbright:

Yes seems a bit stiff at the moment but needs bedding in at least 500 miles they say.

Along with the thinner sump gasket I decided to buy a new sump as the original sump wasn't that straight, could only get chrome at short notice, nice bit of bling though for those wheelies off the line ;)

Lookin good Carl, I take it you dropped it in without the headers affixed then as per a previous pic. My headers are an absolute c@nt to remove / fit, wish I could drop the motor back in with them on :thumbright:

Yes second time I put the engine in I didn't have the headers on I bolted it to the bell housing then fitted them before lowering onto mounts. 1st time I put the engine in I had the headers on but had to lower the engine in at such an angle so they would clear the bulk head, and that's when I noticed the oil leak out the back of the sump.

Looks great Carl, hope all goes well!
What headers are those and do the fit well?

Hedman headers, nothing spectacular but can get to all the bolts easy, easier than the Hookers it had on before anyway.

Thanks Carl! confirms what the yanks are saying about them. Cheap but effective.

Nice size headers, 1-3/4" by the look?.......I used Hedman 1-3/4" fit together Chassis in-out headers on the '71 340 car, perfect fit and quality was good.

No good, number 1 cylinder sounds like a Jack hammer.

Engine started and ran fine at 2000 rpm for the break in period, once I had done a bit of fine tuning. Then came a little popping out the exhaust now and then, hmm maybe carb needs a bit of tuning as I just rebuilt that too. After the run in period I let the engine tick over while I re set the idle mixture. I could hear a slight tap from number 1, okay maybe number 1 exhaust rocker is a bit lose and that's why it was popping, then I heard a metallic ping from number 1, that didnt sound good! Shut it off and went indoors as it was starting to get dark, that was yesterday so spent all evening pondering over it and not getting any sleep, Cam or lifter? got to be lifter, hope its a lifter, but what if its the cam? then your Bo!!oxd, nah cant be the cam wouldn't hear it ping? Got to be a lifter, I hope. Another day tomorrow check in the morning, and that was how I spent last night.

Anyway today I took the valve cover off and turned engine over by hand, as I turned engine over I noticed number1 exhaust valve didn't fully open, Bo!!ax that's the problem ive knocked the lobe off the cam, hmm no metallic sheen to the oil though, so I took the other rocker cover off and decided to check the lift on all the valves and re set the lash. All the other valves opened fully, but as I turned the engine over further number 1 exhaust opened fully to the same measurement as the others this time, so not the cam then. re lashed all the valves but noticed the exhaust rocker adjuster had to be wound down a bit further than the others at least 2 or 3 threads further, so my money is on a lifter has let go, put it back together and tried it again tapping worse than before. And a lot of vibration from the engine too.

I wont know for sure until I take the inlet of and look inside.
