Did you get an answer ? I had someone ask me a similar question. Years ago I used to use Shultz but sure there is a better or more modern equivalent ?
I was just advised about a product made by Wurth. Almost like a spray on rubber, he said it's not cheap but the best ....

3M Body Gard is the stuff you need. It's not cheap at about 12 quid a can but you can get smooth or textured and with 3M two part spray sealer, you'll get a top job that you can spray straight over with basecoat and clear if you need to.
