Progress has been a bit slow on the Satellite due to some necessary d.i.y in both Lane households but as we'd both earned a free day this weekend, we had a look over the work needed and tried to come up with some kind of plan... well that was the plan

As mentioned, we've gone from just wanting to rebuild the carb to get her back on the road, to deciding to:
- repaint the trunk, leaf springs, axle, tank, exhaust - done!
- rebuild steering box - done!
- fit repro console and new repro orginal or aftermarket shifter
- fit new seat belts front & rear
- clean/repaint steering column while disconnected & out of the car
- replace wiper seals (& cure the drip we've had for 24 years )
- poss replace carpet & front seat covers
- fit Mopar mini-starter
- fit front-end rebuild kit (bushes, idler, pitman arms etc)
- And now we've decided to go the whole hog and get the engine looked over freshened up by Paul Knight (after doing such a good job on the Maxie) and while we're at it, get Blue to give the trans a freshen up. Might even get the kickdown working after all these years too!

Not quite sure what to do with the air filter yet tho (not a major concern but it does have a big impact on the look of an engine), as when its all back together, it'll have the luvverly steel valve covers we got from Baccyman at Brooklands, and it should all be painted the correct colour, rather than a mixture of petrol-stained powder-coating, old maybe-correct orange and bare ally
Would like an original style filter assy but know how inefficient they must be so may stick with a K&N

Also need to decide which shifter to use - the one on the left in the pic below is the old B&M that was in the car when we got it, and will be replaced by either the Hurst we got from Dunc earlier this year, or the repro orginal style shifter we got at the Nats.
The choice will be down to how well they fit in the console and how well they work, so need to sort that while the trans is in place, but if we wait for that, it'll delay getting the engine out and over to Paul, so we'll get the engine & trans out first and worry about that when they're refitted

Enough talk tho, I'll try & make the next new post a report on some progress....

Neither of us have had much time on the car in recent months... well I havent had any & Stu has had a little.

He has managed to get some of the bits off the car that need attention, and strip the engine enough to get ready to remove it when I can lend a hand removing the hood. Oh and, once we've borrowed Adam's engine hoist

Stu made a quick 'to do' list and has left us wondering whether this spring might be a tad optimistic

Engine inspection/rebuild
Trans rebuild
New torque converter?
Diff rebuild / new gears fitted
New engine pulleys / brackets to replace chrome pulleys & made up bkts
New (Mopar?) battery & tray (relocate in stock position from trunk)
Source new (stock?) air filter assy
New fuel lines from pump
New carpet & underfelt
New front seat covers?
Fit new console mounting brackets on tunnel (once we've established the bracket positions?)
Fit console (new & used) on mounting brackets, with new (stock) shifter

Could also do with a rewire. Under the dash is a real mess. No time like the present.

Servo / master cyl needs a rebuild too. And the brake pipes where BHP bodged the line loc is a mess (Stu's words, not mine! )

Not all these things need to be done now but most would be easiest when the engine etc is out.

I reckon the floor has got damp from leaky wiper pivot/seals, so I guess we'll be doing that job too..... having put it of for a couple of decades

Thanks Dunc. Still not really sure how far we'll go with this until Paul's checked the engine out for us & we start to discuss the options. I'd like to give it a bit more cam than the previous purple .484 jobbie that's been in there since '87 but we'll be looking to keep it as streetable as poss.

It would be nice to be out there giving Ash a run for his money but realistically we'll only use on the strip at the Nats or maybe the HRDs (like we do with the 63) so it'll be built so we can use it on the road as much as poss.

do it right, whilst it in so many bits, nats 2011 it is then, unless youve get more spare time

Make sure that your replacement cam is compatible with your brake booster - otherwise that can be a real let-down...been there, done that

Thanks Pete, we had that when we originally did the engine. Pretty soon replaced the lifters for Rhoads Lifters - seem to remember it helped the brakes quite a bit. I'm sure amongst us/Paul Knight/koffel (or whoever he gets the cam from), we'll get the right one


Spent a bit of time at the garage on Sunday.... for some reason Stu said he couldnt get the hood off on his own. I dont know...


Jeeze, I'd forgotten how heavy they are maybe we're just getting older & weaker.

Also checked the bracket positions for the console. It must have had one when new, but the original brackets have long since been ground off. Despite having the floor painted with the rest of the bodywork back in 91, there's still some marks visible to help position the brackets.
Need to get the 'missing link' (see http://www.moparuk.com/forums/viewtopic ... highlight= ) to position the shifter correctly, to get the console & its bracket positions established.

Once that's done, we can get the trans & engine out and get the proper work started

Had a rethink on the to-do list tho...

Thinking we'll leave doing the seat covers till maybe next year.
Ditto the rear end (wanted to change the 3.91s for 3.55 we've had for donkey years) and leaf springs (replace, re-arch?)

Could do with keeping the cost down & getting it back on the road asap, so these little jobs can wait for another time







Scruffy console lid is 2nd hand part Clivey kindly donated We'll spruce it up with a lick of paint & a roll of woodgrain Fablon

Seriously tho, we got a new plastic console 'body' from Dantes and Clivey gave us a bunch of parts from an old one he bought that turned out to be a bit too scruffy. There's no damage to the ally, just needs a polish for the bare ally, a repaint for the black bits and some new woodgrain (Fablon will do!).
Should be good enough, considering a new repro one is $195. Same goes for the other woodgrain bits too.
