I found the front journal has some white metal stuck to it, so it may well be the bearings corroded on with 15 years not moving, then with the first start dragged metal around, which won't get better. Maybe these new bearings will get it sorted. I am hoping so. [-o<

I hope so, I would like to understand how you conveniently do not apply this to the mains................ ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Why do a job once when you can do it twice ;) ;) ;) ;)

I have checked the mains and they look OK.
Also the noise was a knock not a grumble. I have had mains wear on other engines before and its quite a different noise.
I am still trying to limit the amount of stripping required in the space I have to work in at the moment.

Just make sure there's no whitemetal stuck to the journals or pulled in to the oil holes. All clean with the right size shells  should be good to go.

Big ends all in, all within tolerance, about 2 thou using plastigauge.
Oil pump in, turn it over to get to TDC, big click noise as it turns.

FLEX PLATE IS CRACKED -

I am now thinking this could have been the knocking noise all along, as it sounded like the back of the engine.
Has anyone else had a cracked flex plate and know what it sounds like?

If this is it i am relieved but also annoyed that I have been everywhere but inside the bell housing to find the noise.
I didnt think my engine build was that bad, and I had not really found anything that would cause the noise. Even the one big end down to the copper I wouldnt expect such a noise from that.

Time to find a flex plate then!
Ive got a spare converter but no plate.

Not had a flexplate crack but have had the bolts loosen and hit the block as it rotates which sounded just like the ends or something else expensive knocking.
