I didn't realise they went over the top of the old roof.Is there a point where you have to start again from scratch or the roof would end up 10 foot thick or am i missing something ?

Great question, Jerry.
With REED you take it ALL off EVERY time.
With Long Straw (what I have) you only feather off what you need to get a flat surface of undamaged straw.
However, after 20+ years the existing straw has thinned out considerably.....as it ages it gets blown by the wind against the Chicken Wire and this almost "threshes" the Straw even more, making the problem accelerate.....so in the real world it thins out considerably and to a degree evenly....
...I even made him a nice rake to even the old straw out......

A Cold call was received this afternoon for Solar Roof Panels...
......pooooor Girl was minutes into her typed up Speel before I got a chance to say "Grade II listed, Thatched" and then the line went dead...........

Not that far away.
The good thing is you can repair them with a saw, nails, spit, gorilla snot, and a lick of paint..........very low thermal properties though. That was always the drawback with gorilla snot.........
