Stuck during brake disc/drum swap. Again...sorry

Hi,

Just started to take the old drum stuff off before fitting the new disc brake kit.

I'm stuck at the point in the picture, is there any reason that I'm missing why that bracket/arm won't come off that joint at the top other than 40 odd years of being bolted on and being stuck? :help:

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

I do it the other way around.
I slacken off the top ball joint nut, and with the torsion bars still loaded, I shock the knuckle at the top taper area with a hammer and it "pops" off.

If you carry on with your current approach you will need a ball joint splitter.

Or if you're willing to sacrifice the rubber boot- a good blowtorch

Glad you get it sorted :thumbright:

Pete is spot on. With the suspension pulling down on the upper ball joint a simple hammer blow will make it pop off. But only loosen the nut so the nut catches it and stops it breaking your legs or something.

Mounted the drivers side brake disc unit but when turning the steering wheel I came up against the mount for the sway bar.

Have I done something stupid like fit the passenger side unit to the drivers side or will the back of the brake pad unit clear that mount when the wheel is on and the car is back on the ground?

Or is it just the wrong kit? Which will make me really angry.

There is no instruction pack in the kit so I'm making this up as I go.

Caliper goes to the rear. Try that next. Then worry.

Ok, I'll try that.

I didn't know if the two units were interchangeable or if they were meant for a particular side.

I'm just going off other people's pictures of brake disc kits.

That's all I had to go on.

Cheers Pete

This is why I commented in the other thread about LCA's with sway bar fittings....If you fit the caliper to the rear you may find you have problems with the brake lines. I found the best way out of it was Goodridge and expensive fittings.....

Braided brake line does not have to be expensive. Contact Mr Benn.

If you look at my 1970 B and E body LCA you can see they mounted the sway bar bracket further inboard from the shock mount. This gives more clearance for the big slider calipers.

You will not be able to swap your calipers to fit the other way around. I think the caliper brackets and lower ball joints can only go on one way. So I think you are stuck mate. :(

Can I not just swap the whole unit? If I use the other disc and caliper set then the caliper will be on the other side of the disc (2 O'clock instead of 10) and out of the way of the sway bar. If that makes sense?
