Flap in manifold

What purpose did this have in my right hand exhaust manifold, how was it actuated and is it OK that I've wedged it open? :scratch:

Its called a heat riser mate. Closed when engine cold and open when engine is hot. Helps engine reach normal operating temp quicker. Jamming it open wont hurt, just means it wont be running optimally for a little longer - if that makes sense.

Arran, Id lose that glass fuel filter to...replace with something that cant break quite as easily...potentially v dodgy

it was controled by weight and bi metallic strip coil spring thing

designed to stop carb and inlet iceing by directing hot exhaust to the manifold. similar set up for choke activation as well

the carb is a restriction in flow
the mix expands under it in the plenum which intoroduces a natural refidgeration effect

this heat riser was to guard against that

Mopars had to start and run on cold mornings from florida to alaska

in dry and humid climbs

On 6 s and 4s with the inlet hanging off the side they are more important as you get less heat rising off the hot engine into the manifold. i just hacked mine off and blocked everything up no spare for this kind of thing

a long and deliberatly restrictive induction system (like a vw beetle) can freeze 1/4 an inch or so solid ice onto the inernal bore of the maniofld for the first 3 or so inches exacerbating the restriction- refirdgeration effect to the point of none running.
their heat risers are on all the time.

free flowing open plenum or tuned length type manifold and a carb suited to it much much less liklely to be an issue

Yes Allkiller, there are two glass filters on it :shock: who thought that was a good idea for a car [-X . I,m planning to replace the fuel line before she's on the road.

Arran your not to far away from me...just the wet bit :lol: give me a call next time your on the way up the A3...im very near the Liss turn off.

Also do you Know Paul Watts with the 540 blown Super Gas 68 Chevy truck on the Island, he's about a mile from the ferry port.
....been a good mate of mine for 25 years plus..helped him build that truck, might be coming over to see him in a week or two

I haven't heard of the chap but I think I saw the truck at the Isle of Wight classic car show a few years ago?
I,m busting to get the car on the road and join the south members convoy up to the pod for the euros but I think I,m looking at next year if I,m realistic :cry: . I,m also trying to renovate a house so we can move in before my wife flips out, and spend time with our 3 kids :violin:
