Vinyl removal

What's the best way to remove vinyl from a laquered finish? Struggling to get it of in full pieces and once it's torn I can't get underneath it to start it again. :? Don't want to launch at it with a gasket scraper without checking, as don't want to damager the paint.

Also, it's leaving a lot of adhesive residue behind. What's the best thing to attack that with. Guessing thinners would hurt the paint?

Thanks in advance. :thumbright: :read2:

Stu, I've used a hairdryer - this softens the vinyl and makes it easier to peel. The sticky stuff left can be removed either with white spirit or label remover spray.

:thumbright: Cheers Dusty.

First time I've had a use for a hairdryer for years.

Didn't know there was such a thing as label removing spray. #-o

Yes. But it is very hard to find because usually the label on the can has come off.

No problem Stu :thumbright:

I used to use one and ride one, but like you, not for years ;)

I bought a can of label remover from RS Components about 15 years ago and still have it. I understand you can still get it and have seen it about on the net. It is great stuff :thumbright:

A hot air gun will be quicker than a hairdryer.
Don't be tempted to use thinners of course (will lift the paint).
I found white spirit wouldn't touch the adhesive under my vinyl roof but solvent/acetone did the trick.

Hairdryer worked a treat, thanks Dusty. :thumbright:

Just need to get the adhesive residue off now, so will try white spirit first. Suspect the residue will not be of such stern stuff as on your roof, Martin. Just underneath vinyl stickering. :)

Oh crikey, sorry Stu. Didn't realise it was just stickers. I'm glad you didn't use a hot air gun!

:D Especially as I didn't tell you it was on coated and laquered wood. :D

 Caught out, Dusty.

Whilst it's so cold, my guitar is getting a bit of TLC until I get back to the Barracuda.

Cleaned up one of my vintage pieces only last week....
