I want to paint the engine before I drop it in the chally. I was talking to a mate who has done a few resto's and he suggested two pack etch priming it before painting it blue, so I don't have to be to clinical cleanig it first. Has anyone got any words of wisdom on this also where is best to get the paint and rattle cans from

American AUTOPARTS has the paint in stock and all I do is strip all the old paint off and the degreaser the engine and the paint it and job done. I have never used primer and I painted my engine more than a year ago and it still looks good.

Twice I've done the same as you Anton and bought the paint from USAutomotive and within a few months the paint flakes off. Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

I've done the same Martin and it still looks great 2 years on!

Of course, it hasn't turned a wheel in those two years...

I've done both and had varying degrees of success!

Etch primed and two packed the 383 in the runner and it flaked around the headers, did the two engines previous to that with the US Automotive stuff and it worked fine!

I have to admit the two packed finish looked loads better and I believe it may have been a prep issue, but I think I'll go for the rattle can next time.

This is what I don't want to happen, I thought the etch primer stuck like sh#t to a blanket and may make things easier

You are right, properly prepared etch primer and two pack has to be the way to go, in fact thinking again, I'll probably do a better job and do the two pack job properly because it did look pukka.

I would rather put in a dirty engine than one that half the paint drops off

This is how my RR motor turned out etch primed and two packed...the flaking occurred around the head flanges, but otherwise it looked superb!
