Anyone know how to apply for exemption from VED for '73 cars in the new tax year and how long it usually takes the DVLA to process them?
Getting excited about the prospect of not paying tax on this one again.

I'm going to find this out as I have 2 in this situation. Problem is mine are registered 76 and 79 but both built 73. I will look into it and report back.

I emailed DVLA a short while back & actually got a response!
Thank you for your email received on 16/9/13. Your email reference number is *******.
The exact process for pre 1974 vehicles in not yet finalised. What I can confirm is that an application would need to be made for a tax disc in the historic tax class. This in turn would generate an amended V5C.
Currently change of taxation class applications are dealt with by DVLA Swansea which would mean that the V5C would need to be posted along with insurance, MOT and a V10 application. Provided the vehicle record already indicates that the vehicle was manufactured prior to 1.1.1974 dating evidence for the vehicle would not be necessary.
Some of the more straightforward change of tax class applications can now be processed at the Post Office. It is therefore possible that the conversion to the historic tax class could be added to the change of tax class services which the Post Office currently offer.
More precise information will be available closer to the time.

Hi Dave.
Never did bother to argue the 2 or 3 missing cubes when I got it registered.
The DVLA had no idea what it was and seemed like a struggle even with a letter from the Holden UK register to get it done so never bothered to explain exactly what a Holden 308 was.... just grabbed my new rego papers and got outa there.

i thought if your ownership papers showed it was pre cut off
you could just go to the PO and get a £00.00 tax disk
just fill in the form as HISTORIC rather than the normal passneger/light good class
however it a long time since i did this. i.e pre emissions taxing

I've been in touch with DVLA, spoke to a real person who was very helpful. I explained my cars are 73 build but 76 and 79 registered.
He looked them up and said, no problem as they show on the log book as declared year of manufacture 1973, so no need for letters, just send in the V5C and an application for a tax disc (v10?) at the start of April and they should come back with revised tax class and a free tax disc.
Moral, read the details on your log book before doing anything else. If it says a a year of manufacture already you may be OK and not need any proof of age for a car built up to 31st Dec 1973.

Are they going to refund the remaining x months of a current paid-for disk though?

Just checked my V5C.
Date of first registration: 01 01 1973
Date of first registration in the UK: 24 07 2009
Hope the DVLAs own paperwork is clear enough to them when the time comes.
Thanks Matt.

At the rate I'm getting on with the work on my Dart, I think it will be April before is ready.
It say build date on the door shut sticker 11/72 but registered 10/73 on the reg sheet.( must have been unsold for a year nearly ?)
So should be straight forward after April, or before I'll see if they will accept a picture of the shut sticker as proof of build date.
I'll see how I get on,It's one step forward 2 steps back at the moment.
