USA car hire or just turn up.......

Every year I pre-hire a car before we go to the States and always end-up having an argument over what I booked versus what 'similar' they have versus an upgrade and the extra cost, etc..... spend about 2hrs arguing the toss every time and feel like I've been turned over...

So anyone just arrived with no reservation and played them off against each other and got a better / good deal?

I'm quite happy to have the negotiation with them so I may as well keep the cash in my pocket to the last minute and see who comes up with the best deal is my preferred approach this year. Will it work do you think :?

book before you go & get everything in black and white on an email and I ask them to send me an email to say paid in full no further charges/taxes
these are who id try

budget,
carhire 3000
carentals.com,
autoeurope
ebookers on I phone cheaper than on pc ?? don't know why

I prefer to book directly through budget than use a brooker to avoid any confusion & budget/thifty are always the cheapest of the us companies

You will pay top dollar if you just turn up

I’ve used these people several times for cars in the US … www.cheap-car-rental.com … who are actually Transit Management Ltd, 252 High Street, Orpington, BR6 0LZ, UK. Tel: 0208 002 0396

they’re cheapest I’ve found and the rental includes …unlimited mileage, loss damage waiver, supplemental liability insurance, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection, taxes, fees, homeland security fee and airport customer facility charge … which is often all extra when booking direct with rental companies

they book with Dollar or Alamo. last year I booked a mid-size suv / Jeep Cherokee, on arrival they didn’t have a Jeep so got upgraded foc to a Ford Expedition, 2 weeks for £420 all in, all I have to do was fuel it

still doesn’t get you round the ‘choose the car model you want’ problem, but it might be worth a call

Death

Taxes

"Do you want to upgrade your Hire car, Sir" conversation.

This is who I've used on my last 3 visits to the US, no problems whatsoever and easy to contact with any changes etc as they are UK based. Did the " Skip the counter" 2 weeks ago walked to the garage, guy came over and I was out the airport within 10 mins, no queue, no upgrade crap :thumbright:
