Shagged my trans, help please!

Ok, looks as if Saturday's racing came at a cost.

Here's the symptoms. Drove down the road to min roundabout, car shifts down naturally followed by horrible sound of metal grating against itself , can't really describe it better. It's almost as if something is loose and running against another part.
Darent to drive it agian as it sounds like imminent breakage could occur
At the races I overshot the tree when staging and banged it into reverse rather hastily and might have damaged it then.

I actually drove home the 8 mile and it only happened onece and that was again where I was coasting around aroundabout, blipped the throttle and Nast noises ensued.
Where do I start looking?

by the sound of it I'd be looking at my bank balance first !

sorry to hear of the woes, doesn't sound good. I'm sure Duncan will be along shortly

Bank balance or not mate, it needs fixing. I truth I was always annoyed at the very short first gear reach. Irrespective of any adjustment to the kickdown it always shifted up at around 3,500.
Next time round I want it shifting at 5.800 to do justice to the motor plus I could stop manual shifting then, too.

yeah I know what you mean, did anything sound funny when you were giving it some beans ? you know like a jolt or shudder?

can you burn the bands out? gearboxes are a dark art to me

Is that not controlled by the governor?

Go Manual valve body - you know it makes sense ;)

Check the convertor bolts havn't come loose or the flexplate has cracked before you get too carried away.

Blue, I did consider the flexplate as it appears to be a stock item. Not had time to investigate but the fact that it is fine for 20 minutes driving then, suddenly wrong for a moment seems strange.
These trans are strong and I've never broken one before and I also had an TCI flexplate in the past.
It does make a nasty ratcheting sound so if it's just a broken flex plate I'd be pleased.

Sounds like a broken sprag, it holds the trans inside the case, and when it goes it sounds like a ratchet, mine did the same thing, the fix is actually stronger than the original , just my :mytwocents:

It is a very telling sound , once you said " ratchet" , one you never forget, the main thing is you can limp home, cause the unit still works enough to power the car :thumbright:

Yes Drew, that describes it. In fact I. Was able to drive home normally and the trans was fine. The problem becomes apparent when the car is downshifting gently or has the throttle blipped at idle.

Pull the pan and see if you see any bit in the trans. Pull the valve body and you will see a lot more on the internal parts of the trans.

These are what you need to move the shift points of your trans.

Hi Anton, have you used these in your own trans?
My previous 727 shifted at 5,500 in first under full throttle.
I could never work out why the current trans would shift so ,low, typically at 3, 500rpm which is way low.
I would be happier just letting the trans shift rather than as current having to shift precisely (!) through a column linkage; a sort of contraction I terms!

I agree with Blue . . . on my way back from Prescott I came off the M5 and it sounded like a cement mixer . . but all still worked. Jim Smith suspected a cracked plate but it WAS the converter bolts undoing themselves !
