Wiper motor questions '74 Challenger

Hi all, as I work my way through my list of "to-do's", I'm now at the point of trying to fix the wiper motor.
It is a two speed motor and both speeds work, initially.
The wipers will do about 4 passes and then just stop and die mid pass. If I give it a minute or two and twist the knob back and forth, they go again for a bit, then same again.
They also don't dock if I turn them off mid flight.
Are these motors reconditionable (if that's a word) or do I just bite the bullet and get another for Â£150 odd ?
I'm not sure whether this is a motor seizure issue or an electrical one, any clues ?
Also, when they DO work on high speed, they don't half hit hard - is there meant to some kind of rubber dampener there somewhere.
Just getting all them things done before Spring done sprung !

It may be the switch and motor don't match, there are variations and I'm not sure how to tell them apart. They did a 3 speed wiper i think.
All i know is mine is all over the place, slow and fast speed and no self parking, it's on my to do list as well, but for now I just time switching them off to when they get under the hood area!

simple motor simple switch complicated wiring

take photos before dismantle

in some cars the wipers behave oddly until the switch is bolted into the dash

the case is often used as an earth for the switch

i.e you can spend days swapping wires with the switch in your lap and never get the wipers to work until you mount the switch to the metal dash. be warned

Matt - I think you may be onto something here. Although my switch is a two speed, the motor appears to be s three speed motor.
Yes, when they are on FAST, they're on bloody-silly fast, whipping back n forth at am amazing speed.
I too just try and time mine on the return to dock right.
Added to that, the chap who had it sprayed the engine compartment black, including wiper motor and all associated wiring !!!!
Perhaps time to get a smaller two speed motor and rewire.

I have a spare wiper motor taken from my 72 challenger, 2 speed I think
Also a spare wiper switch. Let me know if you need them. 07776 142880

Yes make sure the dash is grounded, and also the housing that holds the switch, there is supposed to be a long screw that goes in the bottom of the housing it not only holds the housing, it is the ground,it is long so it will reach the steel part of the dash, I never trusted it, and just ran a wire for the ground,but also if you have the wrong motor with the wrong switch as you mentioned there are 2 motors,make sure they match, and I just got done replacing both switch and motor ,and they are both 47 years old,wish they made stuff that lasted longer these days....

yes but check those grounds(earth) connections .
