66 Satellite - dash gauge voltage limiter

Hi all,

Looks like the voltage limiter on my '66 Satellite has given up the ghost - I've lost fuel and temp gauges. Any suggestions on the best place to get a replacement?

Thanks for any suggestions! :thumbright:

Rich

Have a look for a solid state replacement, the original style is notoriously unreliable. Mine came from Real time engineering in the States.

Try EBay, I bought a couple from there.

Thanks Blue, Derek,

I like the sound of the solid state version. Just checked Real Time Engineering and they only ship to the States, but I have family over there so might call in a favour! If that doesn't work out then Ebay it is.

Cheers,

Rich

Yeah, although their website says that they only ship to the US, when I paid, an option did come up for shipping to the UK.

Thanks again Blue.

Failing that, you could convert yours to a solid state version.....https://www.allpar.com/history/mopar/electrical2.html

So... I might have been a little premature in my diagnosis of a faulty voltage limiter - have replaced the original with a solid state version and still having the same problems :( :

Both fuel and temp gauges look to be reading low (when working). Today, fuel gauge read about 1/2 full when I've just filled up, and temp gauge is just starting to read (right on cold marker). After about 25 miles the fuel gauge stopped reading altogether but temp gauge was still functioning. On return journey, temp gauge stopped reading too.

Both gauges looked to be working correctly previously, and I've had one or both stop working and then start working again (albeit not correctly) when I've given her a run out a few days later. Any ideas anybody?

Cheers,

Rich

I would check for corrosion at the bulkhead plug for the temp gauge and have a look at the earth on the fuel sender. There's a metal strap that bridges the rubber hose on the sender and then a metal clamp earths the fuel line to the chassis, plenty chances there for an intermittent earth.

Thanks Blue,

So perhaps just chance that both gauges are playing silly buggers at the same time then? Will check for earths as you suggest. Any chance that it could be a dodgy earth on the dash cluster? Has never had working dash lights or(interior) turn signal repeaters since I've had her (all on the to-do list!).

Thanks again,

Rich

Yes it's possible you have more than one fault, after 53 years even the best kept car can have some corrosion on the wiring terminals or earthing points, just a matter of elimination.
