Air con and fan belt query

Hi all,
I’ve removed the AC compressor as it wasn’t connected to anything.
There’s two fan belts that were going round the alternator, AC and crank. Another one goes round the crank, tensioner and waterpump.
Do I need to use three fanbelts or can I just move the alternator forwards and run one belt round it, the crank and waterpump?
If not, what’s everyone who’s removed their AC using to re-route the fanbelts ?
Engine is a 383.
Also, does anyone have a spare spring that sits inside the lower radiator hose. The new hose I have doesn’t have the spring and the old one came out in pieces
TIA

mine has 1 belt servicing water pump/fan and alternator run off my harmonic damper
your damper may have a pulley bolted to its hub instead
if mine works with the correct alignment of pulleys yours will
i'd suggest you need the right pulley and spacer for your waterpump/fan and make use of the easiest of the 2 grooves on your alternator and/or damper arragment

PS you can make a spring from a coat hanger.. the plastic coated wire from the dry cleaners works well enough
wind it round a tin (full or you will Bananarama!) of red bull, or similar (scaffold pole) to get shape and expand or twist up as necessary, to fit

Thanks Dave,
I’ll start getting the pulleys sorted. Love the tip for the hose spring, I’ll do that too.
Thanks again

Normally you need to get the correct pulleys when you remove A/C as nothing lines up to run the water pump and alternator off the same belt. Mancini Racing among others sell them.

On my small block I just removed the compressor and used the fan belt. It fits just fine with no mods required.
That said, I don’t have power steering, but can’t see why it should be an issue.

Thanks Blue,
From my measurements it seems that if I move the alternator forwards by 2.5 inches, one belt will line up with the waterpump, crank and alternator. I’ll have a look at Mancini’s though and see what they’ve got.
Miles, thanks.
I don’t have power steering any longer, small blocks might be a different configuration, on my big block, in the original position the current fan belt arrangement rubs on the alternator support bracket, so I’d need to move the alternator for it all to line up
