DO NOT go out and spend that kind of money for 1 litre of solution which takes 24 hrs to remove most of the rust while still leaving a dull tarnished surface. And you have to connect it to fiddly wires etc.

I have used hydrochloric acid to clean all my parts before painting. After thorough degreasing you simply dip the parts in a 50 / 50 mix solution with water. lightly rusted parts will be COMPLETELY rust free in a few minutes, while heavily rusted parts may take twenty or thirty minutes. Hydrochloric acid will remove ALL the rust, and give you a bright clean surface - which must be rinsed thoroughly and immediately dried with a hair drier or heat gun to avoid rusting.
This method has been very successful for me and is used throughout the industry for removing rust scale and pickling parts before plating etc.
You can buy 25 litres of 38% solution in your local hardware store or agricultural suppliers for aroung ?15 - ?20. It will clean a lot more parts than the 1 litre of hammerite solution and a lot better too!

Obviously you need to follow all the safety precautions - glasses heavy duty gloves etc. and avoid breathing the fumes

GTXDave. Have you missed the point of the article? The whole point is NOT to buy the Hammerite rubbish and do your own caustic thang! You acid method is good, too.

ok gave the caustic soda a whirl and it worked fairly well. im still not sure if your ment to connect both terminals to the rusted object though. i just connected the positlve and left the neg, with a spoon in the solution.
id still rather use the works bead blaster though :P

You can connect both terminals to the rusty object if you want to blow up your battery charger and trip your house supply.
