It should be fairly easy to tell the difference between a weighted six pack damper and a weighted cast crank damper. The only dampers I have seen on cast crank engines are about 2" thick, about double the thickness of any of the other dampers. They had something written in cast in lettering to ...

Anything heavier than a single spring with a damper, and I'd be considering just using the outer spring to break in the cam and then install the inners. No doubt there is a set spring pressure above which that practice becomes mandatory, don't know what that is though. Not sure if that applies to ro...

Guy has what I'd refer to as a six pack damper. Although Senatore says the six pack rods were used till '74, two '76 motorhome engines I have had, both had six pack rods and surprisingly windage trays as well. both were stock and I don't believe they had been apart before. They weren't cast crank ei...

The max wedge is a RB engine, originally a 413 and later 426. The biggest difference with that over the other RB's is the cylinder heads, the cross ram intake and the worlds heaviest cast iron exhaust manifolds. The Max wedge heads are closed chamber and have the biggest ports and valve diameter of ...

Ah, that might explain why I had to have mallory put into the crank of my motorhome 440 to balance it. The 4 or so 440's I have had through my hands that I knew were definitely ex Jenson, all had forged cranks, standard damper, six pack rods.

That's a 440 Source billet set Guy, they are very good, top quality German chain the same as on a Rollmaster I believe.

Hmm, interesting, so the later forged cranks must have heavier throws then to allow for internal balance?

Funny you should say that, many years ago a guy used to keep one of his Astons in the same row of lock up's as my Barracuda. He was a very posh, flat cap and tweed jacket type of guy, but he always stopped for a chat to see what I was working on, very friendly...

The inlet fit won't be a problem. I can't see 10 thou. making a huge difference to the compression either.

All the cast crank 440's are externally balanced. I have never had one of those apart so I don't know which rods they normally have in them, but I'd almost put money on it being the six pack rods. I wonder if the factory stopped using the lighter rods at some point and just put the heavy ones in eve...
