Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
Engine-wise however, it looks like the coolant loss at Brands earlier in the season did have a few consequences. I raced at the Spa Summer Classic in June, which was just an amazing experience. The 4.4 mile circuit sits in the Ardennes forest, and is widely acknowledged as one of the World's best. I...

Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
The setup worked really well when tested in the yard. On Brands Hatch Indy circuit however, it took only six laps for the fluid to get hot enough to melt the plastic reservoir on the pump. The return line fitting pulled out of its boss, and all the fluid escaped. So a redesign is in order. a) cooler...

Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
Had the local hydraulic specialist make up a pressure hose. Standard Aeroquip-type hose should not be used for PS as it's not rated for the pressure.
And I made up a standard hose for the return .

Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
Fitting the Borgeson box was straightforward. I had to shim one of the mount ears slightly as it didn't sit quite flat on the K-Member. IMG_7260.jpg Adaptors also purchased from Borgeson to give -6AN connections to the box. A little roughly machined, and packaged complete with swarf, but they'll do ...

Used the plywood template to make the steel backplate for the bracket IMG_7251.jpg and spaced the pump off on some studding to set the belt alignment IMG_7252.jpg then made the rest of the bracket . Shown partway through here - further bracing to be added IMG_7256.jpg and faced off the pump mount su...

Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
So some more details on the power steering conversion: The steering on the car has always been heavy and slow. Wide tyres and 6 degrees of caster not helping much . Finally gave in and decided on a power conversion. Chose a Borgeson box, Borgeson UJ, and GM Type 2 pump (since it's modern, small, and...

Re: Fuel filter?
The glass ones like that are generally poor quality and I don't like them THe metal canister type are good but you can't see inside or service them. I like the ones like this . Available with paper or metal filter elements, not expensive, and fully serviceable. You could use one with -6 connections ...

Re: Oulton Park 27th of August
I had a good time racing. Also nice to meet Simon, and Ray C. Hadn't been to the circuit before . It's very challenging and rewarding with plenty of bumpy bits and a few blind crests. Here's what the American end of the paddock looked like : paddock.jpg I qualified in front of both Mustangs (got to ...

Re: Sticking disc brakes on both sides (Cuda).
The problem is almost certainly further up the system, as you've proven by cracking the lines open , but by all means do the calipers and flexibles whilst you're there. Even good flexibles will be tough to blow through because of the small bore. Replacing with new standard hoses is cheap and easy an...

I’ve just entered to race there. Quite a few musclecars expected on track. Looking forward to it.

Re: Sticking disc brakes on both sides (Cuda).
Flex hoses can collapse internally as well and cause calipers to drag. Either that , or both calipers’ pistons or sliders have started binding at the same time. Unlikely, but possible. Crack the lines open first before then after the flexibles and see if the calipers release. This will narrow the pr...

Re: Sticking disc brakes on both sides (Cuda).
Pushrod between master cylinder and servo may be adjusted too long, not allowing master cyl to retract fully. Either that, or the brake pedal is being prevented somehow from coming all the way back up, which will produce similar symptoms. These are the most likely causes , seeing as both wheels are ...

Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
I did buy a couple of Corsa B columns whilst building the car . They're still on the shelf though as : 1) Like Pete says, people do complain about a lack of feel/ self-centreing. 2) You're still using the column to operate the manual box, which at 16:1 isn't really a quick enough ratio for circuit u...

Re: Matt's 1970 'Trans-Am' Cuda
Well Speedfest was mechanically eventful. Spent the previous three days fitting power steering - a GM Type 2 pump and Borgeson box. I'll post details later of the conversion. It worked fine in the yard but no time to really test. IMG_7285.jpg Qualifying - absolutely brilliant steering for around 6 l...
