As some of you may know I am wanting to build a MK3 Tina with a V8 Mopar in it.
The car will be all about the sound not speed and with that in mind.
I've been told that a mild steel exhaust system will sound nicer than a Stainless steel one ?
I will also be short on space, so need the headers to be tight up to the engine I did see some schumacher headers that only come out 65mm,
But a chap I spoke too at a swap meet recently said that cast headers give a deeper richer sound, is this true
Is it true?

Put headers on mine after cast manifolds. BUT i also put on Flowmaster mufflers. The muffler will decide the sound more than the manifolds.
As to what sounds best.......Thats completely down to the persons perspective.
On these cars i hate Cherry Bombs but love the Flowmasters. Not to keen on the sound that the magnaflow systems put out either......But i know of many who hate the sound of Flowmasters.

I had cast iron manifolds, mild steel system with flowmaster 40's on my 2bbl 383 and it sounded awesome to my ears.
It did drone a bit on the motorway though.

What Mopar engine are you thinking of putting in your Cortina? It is going to be a huge job getting it to fit. Back in the late 70's a friend and I put a 318 with 340 heads and cam in a Volvo 123GT. The engine bay was way too small for it. We cut the bulkhead out and moved it back a long way to give us enough room to get the engine back far enough to give us better weight distribution and enable using the stock Mopar fan with enough room for a fabricated radiator. There was no room for headers. We had to use 2 right side standard cast manifolds which are tight to the head and we had no more than 1mm clearance each side. Then there was cutting out the tunnel to clear the 904 trans and propshaft. The Volvo rear end was too flimsy so we fabricated a rear chassis and installed a narrowed 8 3/4 Mopar rear on leaf springs. The weight of the 318 meant we had to beef up the front end. We ended up with a very drivable car which was my friends daily driver for 17 years.
Personally I wouldn't use a Mopar motor. We used a 318 because we had a wrecked Challenger that had been on its roof as a donor car. In your Cortina I would prefer a smaller lighter engine. But if it must be a period V8 I would go for a small block Ford and back it up with a Tremec 5 speed, beefed up suspension, and brakes. 'Still loads of work though.

Has to be a 318 because that sounds better than a Ford V8 apparently Jim. No I don't understand that either...

Whoever told him that? TBH I think the 318 is a waste of space.... for the amount of work involved.
Anyway, he's got a better chance of getting a Ford to fit.
