Stahls Automotive Foundation is open every Tuesday 1pm to 4pm. Fortunately it fell just right that we could visit on Tuesday afternoon. We’d read they had about 80 cars, but what we weren’t ready for was everything else they had in there, an eclectic mix of cars, theatre organs, a mechanical elephant and a huge array automotive paraphernalia, neon signs, etc, etc

Last day in the Motor City, had a ride round a few places before it was time to head to the airport

Cadillac Stamping Plant, this was the place they used recently on The Grand Tour racing the cars in and out of the empty factory buildings. In 1956, Cadillac bought the former Hudson plant to make body panels for its cars. A large building to the south was added between 1961 and 1967. Between 1967 and 1973 the space between buildings was fitted with a roof and converted into a warehouse. In later years, the plant was known as the BOC Conner Stamping plant, making parts for Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac cars. By the 1980's though the multi-storey plant was becoming dated, and was less efficient than more modern single-story factories. In 1986 General Motors announced that it would be closing the Conner plant in one year, along with 10 other factories. 700 employees at the Conner plant were laid off ...

Had a mooch round Woodward Av south of 8 mile, some sad sights, deprivation and dereliction, this was just a couple of random streets, it looked like the blitz, it goes on for street after street, mile after mile, derelict properties intermingled with those still lived in, it is shocking, it's the scale of the dereliction across the city more than individual buildings. Woodward Avenue passes through several historic districts in Detroit and provides access to many businesses in the area. The name Woodward Avenue has become synonymous with Detroit, cruising culture and the automotive industry. Cruising in Detroit was popular from the 1950s to the 1970s in the city's northern suburbs. Turn left or right into any random side street north of downtown and south of 8 mile reveals a very different story today ...

Lynch Road Assembly was a Chrysler assembly plant located at 6334 Lynch Rd, Detroit, MI. It is now home to PPG Coatings and other smaller businesses. Lynch Road was opened for DeSoto and Plymouth production in 1928 at production ended in April 1981, and production capacity was moved to the Newark Assembly in Delaware. Models assembled here included Belvedere, Coronet, Charger, Newport, New Yorker, Fifth Avenue, St. Regis, Gran Fury

Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly is a General Motors assembly plant straddling the border between Detroit and Hamtramck, MI. It was built on the original Dodge Factory location that was built in 1910, which was closed in 1979 and demolished in 1981. The Dodge Factory, or "Dodge Main" as it became known, occupied 67 acres. The plant started off as just a few buildings but it grew rapidly as needed, where it ended up as 35 separate buildings, to include a foundry, before it was demolished. Models assembled here included Coronet, Polara, 330, Monaco, Charger, Demon, Challenger, Barracuda. I was reading in Classic American magazine that GM have announced they are closing the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, one of GM’s most advanced manufacturing facilities, was hoped to help save Detroit ...

Michigan Central Station (also known as Michigan Central Depot or MCS) is a historic former main intercity passenger rail depot in Detroit, Michigan. Built for the Michigan Central Railroad, it replaced the original depot in downtown Detroit, which was shuttered after a major fire on December 26, 1913, forcing the still unfinished station into early service. Formally dedicated on January 4, 1914, the station remained open for business until the cessation of Amtrak service on January 6, 1988. Comprising a train depot and an office tower with thirteen stories, two mezzanine levels, and a roof height of 230 feet, it was the tallest rail station in the world at the time of its construction ...
