68 Charger on 'The Grand Tour'

Post by Stu Twin »

Just watching the latest episode of the Grand Tour - 'Lochdown', where the 3 drive 70's 'yank tanks' around Scotland.
For one stunt they choose a musclecar to drive and Hammond drives a black 68 Charger reg PKE209F, but it doesn't end well.
Apparently a broken brake caliper broke the front wheel which broke the gearbox which broke the engine. ??
Does it belong to a member on here?
The car was owned by someone in Scotland who posted on dodgecharger.com a couple of years ago.

shame they didn't wreck the Shelby or Z/28

We watched it this evening too!

I read about the Charger on fb the other day - it's owned by a guy in Scotland (unsurprisingly) - Graeme Simpson.
He said:
"Yeah the charger is mine. Brake caliper somehow fell off and destroyed the wheel. It was just a backfire, nothing wrong with the trans or engine! It was all a bit of a pain in the arse and don't think I'll be doing it again".

When asked whether they paid for repairs:
"they paid for nice new wilbro brakes and a new wheel!" (willwood I presume  )

and when asked if he got to meet them:
"I didn't. I agreed to it pre covid and would have taken the car myself and been on set, but with the restrictions they just had to pick the car up and drop it off afterwards"

I've been meaning to ask about this. I couldn't understand how a broken caliper could lock the engine and gearbox especially as it appeared to be the front caliper

Good to know there wasn't any major damage in the end!

Yes it all sounded a bit over-dramatised.
Entertaining though. Especially losing the caravan, and sinking the boat. True LOL moments.

It would have been cool to see your car on the Grand Tour Morgan. It's a brave thing to though. Johnny Knoxville's agent contacted me years ago and asked if he could drive my car in a rally. Gumball rally I think it was.
There was no way that was happening!

TBH Morgan, I'd be more surprised if he didn't have a Carrol Shelby signature somewhere on the car ;)
