When I met Shirley Muldowney

Post by Jim »

In 1982 I went to the NHRA Springnationals at National Trail Raceway in Ohio. I was rummaging around some of my old photo's and found this one I took of Shirley Muldowney. This was late in the day after the qualifying runs. I was walking around the Top Fuel pits and stopped to look at Shirley's pink race car, when she walked out of the camper. I asked her if I could take her photograph. She said sure, and gave me this pose. I took the picture then she asked me where I was from. Then she spoke to me for about ten minutes asking how long I was in the USA and what I was doing and talking about the racing and competing with Don Garlits. She was lovely and was in no hurry to go and get on with something else. Shirley went on to win the event. This was Shirley Muldowney with her pink Top Fuel car at her most famous, and she was happy to spend a bit of time for me.

I met Shirley M at Bradenton in the middle 90’s. She was such a lovely lady, she helped lift both of my kids into her rail. Spent plenty of time with them, even gave my son a T Shirt.

My sons not much into cars, but he still remembers her …
