One careful owner....

Post by Pete »

Well, the Challenger broke AGAIN at the "Springspeed Nationals" at Santa Pod.

The good news was that the rebuilt Engine - 580ci Hemi- worked well.

The bad news was that I did not even make it to the Qualifying rounds.

The Early sign on Friday enabled testing = and all the functional tests went well.

First pass on the rebuilt engine and trans was 12.5 secs.

The Second pass was stepped up a bit and the shakedown run was 10.6 seconds at 128mph.

The third attempt was a poor burn out for some reason, and then the launch - well... wasn't!

The Motor hit the rev limiter very briefly, but the car did not move one inch.

The "tow of shame" back to the pits.

Got the car up on Stands and in any gear the Prop shaft did not move at all...

That was me done for the race.

The Smart money was on a Convertor failure, but we needed to prove that.

Transmission out.

Transmission stripped - all good, which was nice as this was the expensive bit....

Still no proof on why the car failed.

Drastic measures - sacrifice the Convertor....

Can you spot the "Smoking Gun"???

mines smaller than yours...
and works in reverse
spin the middly bit to drive the case which is connected to the wheels.. my case cracked, all the migic oil came out, it spins around the crack and isn't driving wheels hence need for a new case half sitting next to my phone. the rest is in a margarine tube, oily, downstairs

presume yours wokrs oposite way
case spins and its vanes drive the oil which drives the middle-ey bit which drives the trans

i presume all those vanes that look all bent in the outer perimier of the first picture are not supposed to be
and are bent by something other than you slicing it open.

did you snap the middle out of the bit the fits into the trans.
i.spinny bit on motor may well supply torque to spinny bit on trans but you don't go anywhere becaue spinny bit on trans is no longer driving its splined or keyed section..

just a guess.. never seen in side a proper REAL MANS converter :) :thumbright: so hard to work out which bit is which

I thought you took it astonishingly well and were surprisingly chilled about it! All credit to you. :thumbright:

Here’s a picture of it looking resplendent in its natural habitat, from around 30 seconds before the fatal moment… 8-)

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not…

That's a shame Pete but sure you will be enjoying her again soon. Everytime I see this car I think of all the attention it had at the NEC. That was a great stand, some fantastic cars on it that were all show stoppers :thumbright:
