The Aussie/south african Diff

Borgwarner Aus PTY made the M78 series axle

don't believe anyone who tells you its rubbish and needs to be replaced with an 8 3/4 with small block up to about 360 CI you are fine provided its an LSD, the side gears and cones are not worn and the preload is in spec. the distance between the bearing saddles in this is shorter than most other diffs of this size that helps to avoid housing twisting keeps the ring and pinion meshed which means it survives.
they only die if they no longer have any LSD action left due to the cones bottoming out. the open centre version on the other hand needs a bit of considerate driving 1 wheel burnouts will damage the cross pins and the spider gears fall to bits

the company became BTR engineering who made the M78 axle
the company then became Dana Spicer Australia who will make an M78 series axle for you but want an agreement for x 1000 per year for y years or more and need to know your shipping arrangemnts. They look at you a bit funny if you ask for 1.

early axle
open or LSD (friction cone) with 25 spline axles (valiant and ford) 60s early 70s
middle axle
mid 70s early 80s
28 spline 4 spider gear LSD (Holden ford GM (3rd gen camaro firebird 82-92) Nissan toyota lotus carlton (IRS M76 centre i think) marcos Morgan Griffith TVR etc

late axle 28 or 32 spline Nissan Holden etc

all use a 7 3/4 ring gear
don't get a ratio lower than 2.92 the centre is offset so unless you can make a spacer for the ring gear don't do it (they do have 4 spider gears mind and were used in 360 TF727 equipped 4 door aussie luxo-barges)
some ring gears use left hand thread L stamped on bolt
ratios from 2.77:1 up to 5.1 : 1

centres swap over no problem

Diff known as GM Borgwarner 9 bolt in US

http://www.gjdiffs.com.au/gears.asp
Most aussie and SA Mopars use the borgwarner M78 series 7 3/4 axle
these guys do the parts.

this is the company that made the axle
http://www.spiceraxle.com.au/
don't expect any help.

http://www.motospecs.com.au/
The sales arm of dana spicer Oz has some old fellas working there from the Borgwarner days who will help you if you ask, but a a bit grumpy if you want specifications that are in cardfiles and filing cabinets and they have to get up from their desks. ask for Greg Nolan do not tell them i sent ya..he doesn't like me anymore after i made him walk up the stairs to the card file archive too many times.

Dave, that's beyond the call of duty mate, excellent...I dread to think how the cost compares shipping from Aus rather than the 'States though.

depends
The US guys screw you on a Pick n Pack charge regardless of the cost of the part (2 rods 2 jets or a starter motor its still $25 to get it off the shelf before they hit you for packing) and of course that adds to the VAT on your full part pick pack post import duty bill.
Aus post doesn't demand that everything small goes in a pre paid $25 or $50 export post pack

you loose big time if its heavy, but it aint too bad if its light and shorter than 1.7 meters.

however it would be worth visiting with a big empty surf board bag for a body panel :)
