What up?

Post by Trigger_Andy »

Thought Id pop in and say hi now that the forum is free for a year. :) Nice to be able to brows the Aussie Section again too. :)

Im still into my Aussie Chargers and have had this one for coming on three years now. Had a few bits a bobs done to it in that time.

Shipped a 4 Speed Set up over from Oz, shipped a 340 in from the US and had the conversion done at a local Classic Specialist but not without a few issues.
Completely gone through the brakes front and rear same with the suspension with a full kit from HP. Made an insane difference to the handling.
DIY Ported the Heads on the 340, maybe spent 80 hours on them. Made a real difference.
Had the Charger in for a front end re-wire, but the Auto Electrician said the wiring under the dash was a death trap so gve the go-ahead to fix that too but he installed a whole new wiring loom and replaced every wire head to toe and installed a modern fusebox. Ive kept the old wiring loom though. Everything that did not work electrically is now working again, ie Wiper Motor, Windscreen Washer, dash lights etc.

Currently have the seats and carpet out. Have a small patch to weld on the Passengers Footwell, so not so bad really. Then I'll install the new carpets.

And yes, I committed the cardinal sin of adding R/T Stripes to it. :D

Same old, same old. Did 10 miles in the Charger last year. :D Its currently in my workshop waiting to get a few spots of welding done to the floor pans then I have some sound deadening to go in then new Molded 4 Speed Carpets.

I really should take you up on your offer to get my ignition sorted sooner rather than later. Hows your Ignition Barrel doing now? The 3D Printed gubbins still holding up?

yeah its all good mate

still haven't got round to putting any on ebay... got 4 sitting in a little bag waiting to be assembled...

if its just intermittent then WD40 will sort it
if the bottom is loose then chances are it will have lost a spring or ball bearing into a place where it should not be

if its just not working or the plastic in the top of the switch is broken. the new bits i have will work as a replacement

removal is a tad awkward

undo steering tube hanger

pull column down
undo slightly bolts at bottom of column on bulkhead
twist steering tube so tha indicator stalk points to floor
take off any covers held on with tiny cross head self tappers
undo 4 BIG cross head screws
pull lock away from column keep in mind the switch is connected to the wires still

undo either
1) small grub screw through lock housing side
2) or 2 bolts at the bottom
depending on style

pull switch and disconnect from either trapezium shaped rubber connector with bullets or modular plastic connector with spades.

i swap em over to the modular plastic connector used on VJ/K... 4 wires in loom need crimped on spades and 4 wires on the switch need em. then each needs the lot pushed into the plastic connector...makes for easy plug and unplug of ignition switch.

switch can be rebuilt...

tools needed to convert to later connector
crimper
wire stripper
4 female spades with lock key and
4 male spades with lock key
and this 050104 4 Way
from here https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/ ... category/7
and a diagram to show what wire goes where.

set your car up as per standard with exactly the same connector used from 1974 onwards

switch detail here viewtopic.php?f=33&t=57785

if stuck yes no probs send switch and i'll have a go at it...
