After much perseverance, paperwork, research and advise from members on here, I have finally regained the original identity of my second/ project Charger.
Reg RBY 273K lives again

It was a suggestion by Matt that if this car was UK registered previously then DVLA may be able to trace it via VIN number, which is what I did, it took them quite a while and they requested photos of the car, VIN number stamped on the body work and chassis plate and location. We got there eventually and the V5 is on its way.

I registered a couple of US imports in 2003 , they came back RBY 762K and RBY 763K
I'm not sure how the system works, but I guess your car may have been originally registered slightly before those ?

When I re-imported a '68 GTX convertible from Germany many years ago, DVLA gave it back its previous UK reg BHJ 151F

Good news indeed.
Regards the numbers, DVLA I suspect have a list of age related plates of the same series and issue them until they run out.
This is common at shows to see many cars with the same letters in the series, spread across all makes and models of the same age.

I believe Pete had 179 and 197 on two of his wing cars, and Dave Madders brought alot of cars in that were issued the same letter group.

Looks in pretty good condition compared to many in Aus still, not a bad one to start with.
