My '70 Charger project

Post by Steve Ottley »

So here we were 12 months ago; a 1970 R/T discovered about a mile from my house. The last owner ran it for a while, then thought about restoring it before ceasing work and letting it sit in his garage for around 10 years. My lad knew the owners' son; he often would say to me " my mate's got a Dodge Charger in his garage" This would be met from me with a slightly disinterested " Really ?" After a few years of this, one day he said " my mate's selling the Charger". Interest piqued, I asked what it looked like. " It's very big and it's got R/T badges on it". Well, I went and had a look and after some initial panic over where to house such a monster ( my home garage apart from being full of motorbikes was not big enough even if it were emptied of said bikes) I found an empty garage ( thanks Mum) and dragged it home. It's very complete, with only a few missing trim pieces that have been mislaid somewhere along the line. Rot- wise the front end is much better than the rear, needing new rear panel, valance, boot floor & quarters. The N/S rear corner had been imaginitively repaired at some time in the past by means of a cut & shut involving half of the rear panel and the N/S quarter from just in front of the gas filler to the rear. This measurements came up a bit short so the rear quarter extension piece was held on with a half inch wodge of bondo so it would sit flush with the decklid! All of this was covered in a quickie US paintjob in blue over the original TX9 black. I was lucky to get a lot of documentation with the car including the original build sheet along with a handbook and all of the importation paperwork. Progress so far- I've rebuilt the motor and all of the suspension, the boot floor's in and I'm partway through the rest of the rear sheet metalwork; I'm a little out of my comfort zone here, but I take advice and proceed with care.

Great project 😀 I'm not far from you near Eastbourne.
I'm hoping to start back on my Dart project this year.
No Mopar related, but your registration number caught my eye.
I have a Seat 850 spider, that I imported from Spain 40 years ago.
It was registered in Brighton , like your car must have been, and probably around the same time.
It's a few numbers different to my Seat.

There are alot of SUF *** H cars about, clearly DVLA used a batch of them for imports, quite a few Mopars with very close numbers.
The Charger looks a great project, keep the updates coming, will be a great thread to follow.

I had the same with my old Cobra rep, Mine and at least two or three others running round with 'BEW ***T' numbers, I was told they were allocated in batches.

Hi Steve. I'm also in Newhaven, and I know this car quite well, having helped Mark get it running many years ago. As you say, originally TX9 black with a white inverted C stripe, it would have been a stunner when new. Glad to hear it's still local - if I can help in any way, let me know :)

I'm with you, 15" steelies with something nice and plump on would be my normal choice, but there's definitely something about the way this one sits...... 8-)
