A few doughnuts worth of swarf there...(Where I used to work you didn't want to come back from doing the scrap run without plenty of doughnuts to hand round the workshop)

Re: Fifty shades of Jade
I decided to change to a different front tyre and due to this a new wheel was required.
Ordered a set of Spun aluminium car rims and had these Anodised black.
Next we got a 15” slice of bar stock to ensure the correct Molecular grain structure for strength and started to machine a wheel Center
Wheel when finished will fit a 17”x 3.5” tyre

Re: Fifty shades of Jade
a) Thats amazing, obviously.
b) So is it inherently balanced in the manufacture ? Or do you now have to spin it to 300mph and take some serious measurements ?

Re: Fifty shades of Jade
Good question
The aluminium billet wheel is machined to a very high level of accuracy and as such shouldn’t need much balancing if any.
The aluminium spun rim may but again very marginal.
I will get onto tyre valve in a future post and this has taken some thought..
We have been working closely with the tyre manufacturer who has been very supportive.
As speeds increase we will be having the wheels balanced but more due to Inconsistencies in tyre thickness and there inherent imbalance. I’m sure everything will be fine up to 200mph+ then let’s go from there.
At 321mph the front wheel will be rotating at 4691 rpm so bearing selection has been critical.
Interesting we have had to use large OD bearing as you get to limitations of individual ball bearing ball rpm.
When it does come to balancing we plan to have the tyres buffed to ensure uniformity and then have each wheel balanced the same way a Crank shaft is balanced.

Re: Fifty shades of Jade
Obviously the bearing has to deal with thrust, side loading as well as RPM, in terms of speed, 4,691 Rpm seems relatively low speed for a bearing.I assume you meant 469,000 Rpmmopar_mark wrote: ↑Thu Oct 29, 20 10:55 amautofetish wrote: ↑Wed Oct 28, 20 9:08 pm Good question

Ceramics bearing are an alternative choice bearing, with exceptional performance & the benefit of reduced drag

Re: Fifty shades of Jade
Correct full sideloading was the issue.
Now we have moved to the larger tyre and wheel we have loads of margin

Re: Fifty shades of Jade
as above very nice work as always are the multiple mounting holes in the swingarm where the axle mounts to allow for some castor adjustment?
