Ha, interesting ! So how many Design/Draughting Engineers do we have in the club? I've been in various Senior Mech Engineer/Engineering Manager roles for 30 years or so, now trying to eke out a living freelance with my trusty seat of SolidWorks...

Will, please tell me to mind my own business, but I'm always impressed by the equipment you have access to, I guess a few of us have a hobby lathe etc. tucked away in the shed, but big CNC stuff, CMM, is this your business or do you just have a bigger toybox than most of us ? ;)

Well that makes at least 3 of us...
and with similar musical tastes.

Yup, been draughting / design engineering since 1980. Using Solidworks full time for the last 14+ years but first used it in 98 and before that first used Autocad in 89. Before that was the good old drawing board!

Wow Guys I didn't know we had so many solid works CAD skills in the building! :read2:

If anyone is free to and willing to donate some time we are really lacking in the :help: CAD :help: department ! :thumbright:

Regarding access to equipment, I'm very very lucky to have some great people on board supporting this project with access to some amazing big boys' toys. :boomboom:

Next up we took our scale model and covered this in fluorescence tuffs for wind tunnel testing.

We built a special base plate that allows us to rotate the model to simulate cross wind affects.

We then placed this model in front of a giant fan and left the room.

Cameras rolling we switched on the 100mph wind !

We are still looking at the data but it gives a very good visual aid to areas that need our focus

Just WOW.

So what conclusions thus far ? Is anything that flutters a problem ?

So do you want to send the air up/over the rider ? I assume you dont want to encase the rider in any way; although frankly its pretty much a missile anyway !
If you send it up-n-over creating a little vacuum for the rider how do you get it to reattach behind ? What a fun little problem (speaking as someone with zero knowledge of these things).

Keep us posted !

What’s the pressure drop of the mesh screen behind the model? It’ll affect the wake structure and change the trailing edge results.

I’m also not keen on how close to the top of the model the shear layer of the jet is.

For the speeds you are looking at you really want to be looking at a moving ground facility. But they are rare outside F1 in the UK.

Looking at the facility it looks like an NVH department rather than an aerodynamics department.

Tufts are good and we’ve done it a lot. Given the choice though I’d pressure tap the model.

Looking at those results there, you already know what you need to do to reduce turbulence behind the rider.

The bit I’m interested in though is the tuft on the leg. It’s showing strong outflow. That will interact with the wheel wake and increase the overall vehicle wake and thus drag. Figure out a way to get that flow more aligned.
