Supra gearbox

W58 is ok on NA cars.. When on a turbo car they $#@! themselves pretty soon..
R154 is great, came on Mklll Supra, JZX's, Soarers..
V160 requires 2x credit cards..
BMW E46 M3 6spd Getrag is becoming more popular in the drift world, Solid box that'll take muchos power and be a load cheaper than v160. Lovely shift too..

Great thread keep the pictures coming and the great work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah i was offered an r154 but at over twice the money i gave for this w58 it was out of the current price range. i spoke to a buddy who build jap drift cars and he suggested the bmw box too, but the bellhousing is also half of the gearbox casing so machining and welding is needed to fit one. he says it's the input shaft that is the weak link on the w58 but uprated ones are readily available so i can cross that bridge when/if i come to it.

the runaround today went very well. even the excursion into n/e london. i usually avoid london at all costs (i'm just too impatient) but sometimes you just have to and this time it went well. maybe i was just driving more sedately as i had the 318 in the boot of my little c class merc already along with spare heads in the front footwell? then the box on the back seat and the poor old girl was weighed down. it was fine, i've had 2 (at the same time) 350 chevy engines in it before so.....
got to get my wedding car out in the morning so i can back in the garage and unload it all. pics tomorrow.

Nice

T5

mustang T5 has centre back shift box
GM has truck s10 front mount Gm shift box, good for TVR, or rear mount GM shift box But the rear mount on the tail housing has a offset mount. its about 35 degrees off from parallel with the ground these T5s were run at an odd angle and suffered oiling issues

GM holdens used a rear mount shift box with a ford shifter
or another version so far back it overhangs the yoke ford style shifter box but you need a special small yoke
Aussie ford used mid back (mustang style) or rear position depending on year

aussie tail housings are world class so can cater for a reverse idler and brake on 5th gear
aussie tail housings have the speedo drive in the same place on the tailshaft housing as US spec gear based speedo but the gears are backwards due to the hole for the speedo bullet being in the other side of the tailshaft housing, only causes you an issue on a LHD car you need a very long speedo cable and aussie drive gears

post 2000 ford T5s use a tone ring electronic speedo with the hole up near the main case
the output shaft has a bulge where the speedo gears should be but no hole for the speedo drive in the tail housing. a split collar and some thin steel shim can be used to hold the speedo drive gear clip as the bulge is not drilled for the clip and the metal is hardened so drilling is quite hard.

aussie T5 all used a different pitch to the gears so only top covers cases and tail housings and bearings work
but the tail housings certainly help with stick positioning and conversion to geared speedo drive.

jeep or big block throw out bearing carrier fits ford IBR both aluminium one and steel one. if you have the option swap to the steel bearing retainer but you may need to reshim the box, keep in mind two lengths of input bearing retainer and 2 lengths of input shaft.

ford racing CobraT5 used a different bearing retainer a pocket bearing or cone bearing not standard rollers

ford boxes came with long and short input shafts
the long one is long enough to put you in a position where
a standard 318 bellhousing on an 18 -20 mm adapter puts the end of the input spline level with the face of the flywheel and leaves the spigot end of the input shaft floating in the crank register area occupied by the spigot on a normal torque converter. i.e just short of the inside the crank based standard mopar spigot bush
no bother
get a mustang and a dodge dakota roller spigot bush and swap the ford roller into the dodge carrier
whack it into the register in the end of the crank and position the roller so the spigot end of input shaft rolls in it

OR and this could be internet codswallop there might have been a t5/mopar/jeep cross over from AMC based engines to mopar engines ford pattern T5 bell ...but i have had trouble establishing if there is and its no use to me with a hemi 6 which seems to combine small block 318 and slant 6 pattern block to bellhousing set up into its own unique mess i.e some 318 holes with slant 6 positioned dowels so i didn't pursue it too far

i might have said all of this once before if so apologies

that's as far as i got....

hi dave,
yeah i've looked into the t5 swap. apparently a mopar v6 (3.9 i think) bellhousing bolts to a small block and to a t5 but i've got a small to zero chance of getting one of them here so the adapter plate route is what i'll do. as for a spigot bush/bearing i'll make a bush on my lathe, i knew it'd come in handy. ;)
cheers, neil.

I collected the engine from Blue on Sunday which is now sat in my garage. It has the mopar electronic distributor so in theory I need the mopar module, ballasted coil, ballast resistor and the little loom to plug it all together. It's available as a package on American ebay for about £100. But I've ordered an updated Gm hei 4 pin module and an e core high output coil for just over £25 for both as i'm tight. There's a company stateside that makes a bracket to bolt the module to the mopar dizzy under the advance can but I'll make my own, again as I'm tight. Apart from cost this setup will give a better spark and is arguably more reliable.

Not that I know of Pete, but I'm old enough to have a bit of mechanical sympathy so i'm not too worried if it hasn't. I can't remember any of my cars having one to be honest :-k
