It's In In!!!!!!

Post by Pete »

Happy new year to one and all.

Today, I have been mostly pulling the Hemi out of the Challenger.

I have concluded I am getting too old for this, Damn they are a heavy and huge engine!
Everything touches everything else, what a mare!

I will keep you posted on developments.

For the record, it has done 8 passes, I am SO happy....

I did not build the engine, but I am sure as hell going to rebuild it and check EVERYTHING!!!!

All the best.

Pete

Hello peter,

why do you feel the need to go through the mtr ?? it was running so well and built by a pro. and so little run time ?

Duncan, Pushrod cups were burnt up, probably happened on the Dyno run (no assembly lube used, etc) the Cups are only splash lubed on the EXH Rocker arms, so asking for trouble really.....better safe than sorry....

Had similar problems with my B1 till I made a spray bars for it, which cured the issue.

I never had any pushrod issues with my old KB, Pete do you also have separate oil feed to the rockers. I always seemed to have plenty of upper head lubrication.

I’m sure you have enough experience and assistance to overcome, but always a Bananarama! on a fresh motor. Good luck

Thanks guys.
Same Valve train set up as per Mark's picture.

Kicking lots of ideas around including oil through push rods, but I am sure the damage was done before it even saw the track - my bad for not lifting the Rocker covers before the first outing, but deadlines, etc, etc.

I have LOTS of old puch rods and none were blue, so i do not think it was an "In use" fault...

This is why (amongst other reasons) why I think it was bad prep by the Engine builder, and it cooked on the dyno as there was metal to metal contact before there was time to get oil completely over the top end parts. Pre-oiling will only get you so far.

I doubt Ian wont have lubed pushrods Pete, and Im sure the valve lash would have been done on dyno,by Ian and dennis, they are will be looking for potential valve train problems at this point, oiling etc.
i did a dragster Hemi that used RayBarton rocker gear, and the oiling set up on the intake arms was suspect,so I made spray bars in the rocker covers, that thing, would have burnt pushrods and killed valve springs for sure.
Old pushrods/adjusters can cause problems if worn,or if pushrod touches somewhere.
I know Tom with the Hemi powered charger as been having valvetrain issues.
Chin up and good luck,if it was easy, everyone would be doing it

Thanks, Dave.
I did not want to mention names just in case, but his attention to detail on the rest of the build is quite good. Insufficient clearances on the Block to Push rods though....

The new Push rod adjusters turned up today as a matter of course. They were new 3/8" push rods so it may be something as simple as incompatible materials.

The investigation will continue... 4 months to go and counting down...
