Ok chaps. Just looking to see if anyone has experienced this... I'm a bit stuck. I will call the rebuild place in the morning and see what help they can offer but I really REALLY dont want to have to take this out of the car again.
Power steering. Worked perfectly but leaked. While engine out, got box rebuilt. Appears to work (installed with engine off, no pump).
Car now back together and engine running. Steering tries to turn itself to the left and its virtually impossible to tun it right. Like not only unassisted but fighting me. I had to abandon any idea of test/shakedown tonight. I'll jack it up tomorrow and see what it does with suspension unloaded.
Fluid is full. Same pump as before. New hoses - no reason to suspect them. They seemed happy to slurp the liquid in.
So any ideas ? Its quite alarming...

Seems it needs a bleed and an adjustment. This is good news... (You have to go a way down in the thread, #14 or so)

There is a valve body THAT MOVES - it controls the centering. Slightly crack two bolts, tap lightly forwards.

sounds like you are on the right track
second geezer on the second link has it sussed
under that manifold that pipes go into is a jiggly pin thingo...technical name
it provides bias 1 way or the other way dependent on its position in the hole it sits in
it hangs off the bottom of the valve/manifold
getting that manifold in the right place will leave the steering centred.
a stuck pin due to steering fluid on one side and air on the other also has the same impact

The gist of it is that there is a 'valve body' held in place by 2 bolts on the top of the steering box.
This is designed to move fwd/aft and its position determines the bias on the pump. Mine came back from the rebuilders with it sitting at one end; needed re-center.
The adjustment is *minimal* - like extreme to extrem is 3/8" or something - so the TINIEST of taps, a mm here or there makes big changes.
Car now tracks true with equal assistance. I was worried - the symptom is scary !

Glad you sussed it! that catches a lot of people out - I've heard of the steering slamming itself to one side and starting to overheat the box in extreme cases. Don't know why the rebuilders don't adjust it (at least roughly) as part of the rebuild.......or at least point out the need to do it once installed
