I'm stupid.......A body Ash Tray

Post by Billybob780 »

I took the dash board ash tray mounting plate out of my 73 Dart..... retained by four screws....
Do you think I can get to go back in ? No I cant !! :banghead: Cant remember how it sits in the dash such as does back screw plate go over the lip ? Does the top screws go under or over the lip ??? Can some one take photos of theirs so I have and idea ?

Cheers

well if its like mine 71 Aussie charger

you have a tin tray that acts as the back of the hole, it has the ciggy lighter bolted onto it
and the front flap is separate part with the ash tray in it, It hooks into the back plate on pins at the bottom of it and the shiny metal twanger on the side of the giggy lighter acts as a spring stop so it can be open a bit or open fully and stay in place

so on mine

you shove the rear tin tray through the hole sideways into the dash
your main urge is to put it in upside down. it looks like it should be upside down....
so work out which end has the pins to mount the door first. they go at the bottom
the whole tray is bigger than the hole. so at least at the top the tray with its threaded screw holes goes over the inner lip of the dash hole from what i can remember

you stick your hand up behind the dash box from the tunnel side to hold it back against the inside of the dash so it fills the gaping hole, with the top bit looped over the inner lip of the dash hole
you then stick in the 2 screws that go upwards into the lip
can remember where the other 2 go but its obvious

you then check out the door flap
1 side has a solid complete hole for a pin to mount it
the other side does not, it has a hole with an offset cutout slot

put the full hole side on the pin to the left and slip slide and mangle the pin on the right along the slot to seat it in its own hole

ping the twanger with your thumb to get it past its end stop and close the ash tray

chances are it will hit 1 side of the hole or other or will not close

so you get out you short handle screw drivers again and adjust the position of the back tin in the dash, undo the screws a smidge so it is stiffly loose on its mount and manhandle it into the right position until the corners or edge of the ashtray door stop rubbing the dash surround. do up the screws again (you need short screw drivers)

Now i'm talking about my own Aussie car here. but i can't think the Aussies bothered designing an ash tray so mine will be 68-73 A body style.

well after writing all of that

turns out the Aussies used something different mor akin to a B body

but the premise is the same

that metal work with the ciggy lighter in it goes inside the dash

how the door mounts dictates which way up
and the fasteners bolt into that metal, so that metal tray sits inside the dash and the dash hole lip will be clamped to it by the screw heads

bored in a meeting so had a mooch

the 1973 dodge body service manual on Mymopr shows how to do the glove box....doesn't show ash tray but there could be similarities

Billybob, the flat unit the ash tray slides into appears to me to hook over the lip at the back. (68 Dart).
