WHICH FUEL PUMP
Hi Need to replace the mech fuel pump on the 400 cu in b engine, original pumps were 20gpm 5/16" inlet.
already has an aftermarket uprated one on it but not sure what its rating is, was thinking of using the 71 440 cuda one as has 3/8" inlet and 33gpm and can get from rock auto
Will this fit ok does anyone know and any suggestion's, car is rated 480hp

Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
I used the Carter M4862 Big Block Mopar pump in my 440-6, worked well.
Keep an eye on the push rod - they can wear and cause problems with under-fuelling especially at higher rpms...
These flow 120 US GPH so not sure where you get your figures....

Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
The Carter mechanical pump solved a fuel starvation issue I had with a hot 440, you do need to use a fuel pressure regulator with it though.

Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
I must admit I did not use a pressure regulator on my 6 Pak set up, but then again the carbs may have been bleeding off more pressure than a 4bbl set up...never suffered from float bowls flooding or over-fueling.

Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
Very common issue on big blocks. If you can believe what you read on the forums, the new replacements wear more rapidly than original parts.

Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
Agreed, you can get some with different finished ends and different materials. I tried to use originals where possible.
I used to carry spare pushrods in the car - that's how much they can wear!!!

Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
they had that problem with the 'crop duster' on roadkill garage, the engine fell flat at half track (1/8 mile) as it was running out of fuel in the carb float bowls.
Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
Interesting, where do you buy just pushrods?
Re: WHICH FUEL PUMP
