Engine Number

Post by witorque »

Can anyone throw any light on the origin of this engine number?
Doesn't seem to tie up with the sticky listing?

Numbers are 3830930.440.6
4T 440T
LGW7
MH.3 30

3830930

internet says that block casting is

1968-1978 440 with steel crank
or 1973 to 1978 440 with cast crank

comments indicate RVs had these with cast cranks

4T indicates its a 1974 I think

if that was LC rather than LG it might mean low compression which fits with the RV end of things

some where in that bunch of numbers it is supposed t indicate a plant that produced the engine. T Trenton?

Just stuck 3830930 into google mind so it could all be cods wallop

I think its a Low compression 440 out of a 1974 RV....but I am in no way qualified to think or say that :)

you'd need head and crank numbers to really be certain

Owner found 4006452 on the head, cannot see anything on
Crank.
What would such a motor be worth if I was to make an offer for it, presuming it is a runner?

again based on digging

4006452 is off a 76-78 400 or 440 motor originally

if it hasn't been to bits or had a head swap

that puts it right in low compression torque monster territory out of a great big vehicle.
with a cast crank

any big displacement motor is worth quite a bit these days

i.e 400s and 440s seem to be really quite hard to come by

but really I have no idea. I know my six cylinders and that's about it

i'd suggest that a 440 out of a challenger and a 440 such as this will be noticeably different in their RPM range and torque

the latter is most defintly designed in the SMOG era

it will have lower compression

The heads are good, the '452 heads are similar to the '906's used on 68-69 and the 346's used on 70-71 383 and 440 motors, except the '452's have hardened valve seats.

Yes, it will be a low compression motor, and may have a cast crank. The blocks are all good, so this could be a good basis for building a nice 440.
