Swapping engine mounts

Post by RichK »

Hi all, need to replace my engine mounts as the driver's side has collapsed. Any suggestions on how best to do this? Is it possible to jack the engine up or is it better to rent a hoist?

Cheers,

Rich

Remove long bolt holding mount to front subframe/K member. Loosen the one on the other side.

Flat piece of wood under one side of the sump (or , with care, vertically up onto the sump rail) jack it up an inch or so (remove fan shroud first)

You can then undo and wiggle the mount out. Might have to raise the engine a bit more.

Stubby ring spanners and/or short ratchet useful for the mount-to-block bolts. They use self locking steel nuts and need spannering all the way off.

Before swapping the drivers side mount, you might want to look at making this mod -

Easy/free(ish) to do and eliminates the risk of the mount breaking while keeping the rubber mount for no extra vibration...

Thanks - had a quick look and looks pretty simple to do. Not sure I'll need it with my 318 poly though :(

piece of sump base sized old kitchen worktop on the jack under the sump usually works for me
spreads the load and we know the sump can stand it as any engine out of a car sits on the sump for years

but spread the load .
