Strong fuel smell

Re: Strong fuel smell
I’ve checked and the fuel is boiling in the carb. I’ll look into getting a phenolic spacer. Thanks for the help.
Re: Strong fuel smell
The reason why I asked about the filter, is with those chrome pan aftermarket filters you can smell the carburetor sometimes through them.
But you have found it so good news .
Re: Strong fuel smell
Yes it's the standard filter and standard air cleaner on the car. When you remove it you can hear the fuel boiling in the carb.
Re: Strong fuel smell
That black hose blanking off the tank port looks like it is possibly split at the top, I'd run a longer piece and clip it like Pete said, that tight bend will instigate a split if not already.

Re: Strong fuel smell
Just bought an Edelbrock 9266 insulator divider, hopefully do the trick.
Good spot. Will look into this.
Hi Matt,
Good spot. Will look into this.
Re: Strong fuel smell
Was hoping to take my car to Santa Pod this weekend but a mechanic smelt the car and advised against it due to the carb. And the space still hasn’t arrived .
Re: Strong fuel smell
marine plywood with gasket copydexed or blue hylomared to both sides works just as well. just make sure of plenty of clearance for throttle lever and kick down gubbins
tuffnol phenolic sheet, fibre weave, or glass weave, plastic resin composite on ebay also works
need a hole saw....
might get you going for the weekend

I'm near Oxford - can probably help you out - I'll PM you
if you think speed kills don't get on a plane
Re: Strong fuel smell
All my yanks with Holleys smell , cars with Edelbrock carbs don't smell , no leaks and never found out why
Re: Strong fuel smell
on an edelbrock there are no seams or joins below the fuel level most things you need to access to change its configuration is accessed from the top

Re: Strong fuel smell
Can you adjust the floats from the top?
Re: Strong fuel smell
yes but you have to take the top off for floats, and 2 jets that sit in the bottom of the bowl. accessible with the correct tip on your screw driver.
the rest sit at the bottom of jet wells with rods hanging through them on tiny springs these all come out the top without taking off the top. they hide under a figure 8 shaped cover on either side of the choke/air filter entrance
so the fuel bowl can stay full for nearly all jobs..just like a 2 barrel BBD or a weber.
no spillage
edelbrock upright bucket
holley 1 or 2 buckets on their side, clamped to the body with a gasket and a sight hole
holley, many people can tune them
edelbrock. less knowledge, here in the UK although places that specialise in Rover v8 installations of weber/edelbrock 500s are handy places for spares and advice
mopar used carter BBS BBD and AFBs (and similar plastic body spread bore carbs) but many people get rid of standard carb and replace with a holley or derivative
edelbrock now make the carter 4 barrel carbs in AVS format using bodies cast by the Spanish company (or a subsidiary thereof) that is currently contracted by magnetti marrelli/fiat to make weber carbs which is why you can buy an edelbock 500 from webcon branded weber 500
my edelbrock 650 had a weber logo cast in

Re: Strong fuel smell
my dart has a Holley 670 street avenger. Alwys a bit of fumes when sitting in traffic. doesn't leak. Just thought it was un burnned hydrocarbons.
Re: Strong fuel smell
probably is
either from up front or short exhaust tail pipe is allowing the fumes to gather under the back end and come in through the boot the via the fibreboard liner behind the rear seat. if burnout smoke can choke your rear seat passengers fumes can as well
i doubt many are running around with a carb that is oozing from its joints
most of us have also removed the horrible horse hair insulation under the dash or it has slowly disintegrated and blown away.
That used to stop the oily wind blowing through the bulkhead into the car.
everything bolted to it originally had some kind of seal around it or under the thing that holds it on, but you can still find gaps at the bottom of the steering column etc
lack of the rubber seal across the back underside lip of the bonnet also allows the smell of engine in through the plenum vent.
so does a badly sealed shifter boot/console or indeed hand brake, any oily breath from the transmission breather, or from the back of the head/rocker tins or a leaking rear main seal goes onto the exhaust, toasts for a while and wafts up the holes when in traffic
the sealed interior wasn't very well sealed to start with. so any car not fully restored has probably got a few gaps.
